What is CM, GM, SGM? <--[Answered] Info and Expereinces about teaching in HK?

I am new to this forum.
Could someone kindly explain those terms to me?

I am a perspective English Teacher, currently studying in the US for a TESOL Education major.

I do not have much understanding about the education field in HK.

If anyone could tell me where to find information that will help me to gain understanding of the education field in HK.(Beside EMB website)

I am hoping to teach secondary school, but info about primary school are also welcome.

I will be much appreciated your kindness

Many Thanks :loveliness:

Welcome to this forum. Here is some information from other websites and you could find the salary scale in the site below.

For starters, please explain the meaning of a 'perspective' teacher. That term is new to me too.

The Education and Manpower Bureau is one of the bureaux in Hong Kong responsible for Education policies and allocation of manpower, hence the name.

CM stands for Certificate Master / Mistress, which are teachers holding non-standard qualifications. GM stands for graduate master/ mistress, and these are degree holders. But the salary is capped to a certain point if you don't have a recognised Teaching certificate / Diploma. SGM is Senior GM.

Just out of interest. With your TESOL, are you planning to become a NET in HK?

Opps... I mean to type "prospective"  :smile_55: Shame on me... :smile_03: I am not going to change it, so I could remind myself for such a careless mistake :smile_51::smile_51::smile_51:

NET?! I don't think I am qualify for that since I am not a native English speaker.

Are you English teacher?

don't worry about it. a forum is a place to unwind and chill. No need to get too uptight about it. :loveliness:

I was a English teacher for two years, passed the LPAT and everything then i switched to Editorial work on whim.

I am trying to develop a good habit, since I wanted to be a English teacher :smile_04: :smile_04:

Your experience is similar to a person that I know.
He did student teaching in my school and became a teacher, but he quit not long after he started and switched to Editorial work. He told me it(teaching) was too stressful.

How's your teaching experiences? :smile_53:

my teaching experience ... well, I've taught for two years in a Band 3 school. What can i say, it's got it's ups and downs. But to be honest, the ups far exceed the downs to me. I really enjoyed it. I love seeing a student improve their grades, be it a mark or an entire grade. I loved playing basketball with the kids, and I loved the way they thank you after a lesson. Even if it was a Band 3 school, those kids are human. Some of them come from broken homes and they don't need another person at school screaming at them. They get it bad enough at home.
Sometimes, you just have to step into their shoes for a second and think about where they are coming from. Just because I had a good education doesn't mean everyone gets the chance to.
Maybe that's too idealistic, but that's my two cents. :loveliness:

I really like how you said about putting ourselves into their shoes.
Sometimes we just forgot we all have our own problems, even the causes might be vary, but we are all human. We need to be loved, but not :smile_55:

thx for sharing :victory:
