In Computer Science world, it is hard to get a Tenure Track position without completing 1-2 post-docs. Most professors in my  school had 1-2 post-docs.

Anyway, post-docs as also called "cheap labor" back in my days.

Physics is the same. It really boils down to the field. Post-doc is more popular in some than others.

Hi guys

I would like to share with all of you about my struggle.

I am a med. lab tech graduated from Poly U.

Obtaining a PhD had long been my dream in my few first years of university life. I start way ahead of others and begged for some research experience in Year 1 of my degree programme. I used to think this is the way to go.

Unfortunately, I had the "WRONG"  supervisor in my final year of study. It ruined everything and change the course of my life big time. I've always thought that I could plan my own research project. Yes. I talked to my supervisor and she agreed to let me do it my way.

2 weeks before the start of the project, she told me that she would not get this and that. I was forced to change everything from the cell line to every methodologies of my study. Ultimately, my research hypothesis was not the same. In fact, my research aim was just made up in the last week of my project.

This turns 180 degree of my life. Hong Kong is a place where you are not allowed to have any creativity. I am no longer following my career aspiration as a scientist. With this bad experience, going back to research just haunt me.

really depends on your luck, sometimes......
you don't have much choice when you are working or studying under someone.  however, you can do what you want if you become a group head, or you can find your own money to sustain your research.  Don't against your supervisor, never.  None of case that against supervisor ends up with good fortune.  good luck!

I know what you mean. You'll probably have to follow the steps of your supervisor. Unfortunately, I am really not that kinna person.

How is the biomedical research industry in HK?

Is it worth it to go for PhD? Everyone knows going abroad is the best. Not many are able to leave though. However, what prospect do you have if you stay in HK? SRA? RAI and RAII? What's the paid? This is a career afterall, isn't it?
