About the CertificationIf you prefer to earn a CCNP certificate, you must earn a CCNA certificate first. At least one CCNP subject must be passed within the valid period of CCNA, i.e. 3 years starting from the date of examination. Then you must earn all the rest subjects within the defined period, i.e. another 3 years. Otherwise, you have to re-examine all CCNP subjects again including the one(s) you have passed.
After you passed the last CCNP subject, you have yet another 3 years to take other Professional level subjects, e.g. CCVP, to keep your 'P' status. Or you may just taking the CCIE written examination directly. Otherwise, all the certificates would be expired. And you may need to re-take the CCNA again from the ground up.
Why Cisco sets the expiration rule so strict? It is because it perceives the networking environment changing rapidly. New technologies emerges nearly everyday. As a professional, you should strike to achieve the highest status, and pick up the most current knowledge.

Certificate vs. ExaminationHowever, if you prefer to get the knowledge but do not care about the certificate, you may take any examination at any time or pace. You just pay the examination fee, there is no checking in the examination centre for pre-requisite, at least for the computer-based MC examinations.
You may wonder whether such attitude would be accepted by your future employers. Of course, it depends upon their needs and choices.
During job interview, instead of presenting some Cisco granted certificates, you may present a bunch of Cisco examination result of passed subjects to your interviewer. A simple excuse is there was not enough time to study because of heavy work load. But you know how to perform the tasks well as required, which are indirectly proven with those examination result sheets. If you think that there is not many candidates possessing a certificate, you should be condifent to be short-listed at the 2nd interview.
