Why are people so inactive on this forum section...

Is it because its restricted to english only? :(

野雞大 2011-7-6 01:20 PM

I have to say yes. Most of the thread are written in Chinese. The replies are mistly English may the PHD thread in further studies.

Anyway, this is HK and most of the user here are young and not used to write in English.

I come here to learn how to eduate the next generation( eduate myself) as I am nearly retire and have time recently.

Well this is just another sign of the English  education level in HK is still kind of  low (but not too low like some Europe countries). For most of the time when I meet with people who are fluent in English, they are most likely the returning students from foreign countries or atleast one of their parents mother tongue is not Chinese.

Actually I can still live with Chinese conversations, providing the content is complete and clear.

rallo 2011-7-7 08:56 AM

Did you come across a situation where your fluency in English turns into a sign of threat to your superior?

野雞大 2011-7-7 10:31 AM

It all depends on what kind of skill you need for your job. English is just on of the skill I need,  not so important as I am on a very specific technical field.

Whenever you have a very good skill in your job, it can be a threat to your boss. If your boss is good, it is OK. If not, either you replace him/her or you have to find another job.

In short, "Always". unless you are working in an global firm and your superiors are fluent in english, otherwise I can safely say 99% of the time this kind of scenario is a threat to your bosses. (I have been into this kind of situation before, but I was lucky that I wasn't directly working under that person)

English, TC ~ SC, are what I needed for my job, the painful part is to put my ideas from English back into Chinese in order to have people understand me clearly.

:)   Although my English is poor. I still enjoy using English here. I think it must be good to spend more time using it (as I want to learn it). And I really don't want to learn Chinese typing. It's very surprising to me actually that almost all people in HK find using English so hateful.

ClearBlueFTW 2011-7-9 05:05 PM

No, it probably just means that ppl who uses this part of the forum have ACTUAL work to do... I mean, you do understand that most ppl use this place to burn time during work right?

I got confused by your message in the beginning, because you seemed to be thinking of something else when replying this. Beside the fact this is an Eng. Ver discussion board, people can still come here to leave messages when they are off work, don't you agree?. I just can't find the correlation between an English forum and surfing online during work hours like you said........

:)   He's right. If you do a statistic on the group of people tend to use English and the other of Chinese, i think it's very likely that the English group is much busier on average and don't keep surfing the net all the days.

my question is.... why? is it because there are not many here? but (I doubt this)

I guess you are trying to say that they are working on more time consuming tasks? (but i do agree with you that they would prefer to hang out in clubs/ bars after work anyways, something relaxing.

kinsang_lee 2011-7-10 12:16 PM

As a student,i think it is good for me,i can learn english grammer here.

:)  I don't expect myself to be able to learn grammar here. But keep using it must be a good trainning. And it seems it still okay to make a few friends here.

well atleast people can learn some slang instead of formal english that seems like directly reading off from a page of article.

To reply the original question:

Well... if "at least" the main buttons and indications could appear also in english on this forum, there would be more traffic.

It took me a while to create an account on this forum: I do not read chinese, so creating an account was kinda hard...

Making it slightly more international would help improving the traffic, I'm sure!

Actually...

That's too bad that the two main HK forums (discuss & youwants) are just chinese based.
The only english forums are expat forums...

That's like if chinese and foreigners couldn't get along together, that's sad.

It should be at least ONE section for all people to chat together on this forum.

Reading the posts most of the time and shy to reply to any of them. :smile_13: :$

no clue, but i kinda agree that ppl in hk generally cant really speak/write good english. might be the major reason

後街男孩 2011-9-2 11:27 PM

nice to meet you all here. for this question, I think the main reason mainly comes from English is not the official english in Hong Kong. people need to process the message they wanna convey and it is not easy to do so. Not like Singapore, citizens are forced to learn english.
