There are just too many lawyers in Hong Kong now!!!
jimbo86 2013-1-8 08:04
just met this guy who educated as a optician here in vancouver, he went to work for an airline here, as whatever, but he worked hard and slowly climbed up to be a salesmanager.
normally these pos are reserved for someone with business major or mba.
so how he got it? he must have worked very hard.
yes having a lic to practice doesn't mean u will find a job as a lawyer. u need EQ and outsmart your opponents too.
assuming a lic to practice is a license to print money that idea were long gone, u have to been born 30 yrs earlier.
probably medicine and few under supplied professions will land u a job soon as u got your license.
i cant say whether is a good thing to have born now or 30 yrs ago. when we're kid I was told things were much easier too.
if u have the aptitude to study then law could be your ticket. i would go into something that has a license ie accountant , since a MBA the bozz could give u the pink slip when he's not in a jolly mood.

It's absolutely oversaturated in the US, UK, and Australia now.
How do you guys see the law market (ie supply of lawyers vs firm intakes) to be like in five to six years? My gut says that not much ...
I am seeing the whole picture differently. I think the law market and the investment market will have more rooms to take in new trainees because in the next 10-20 years, lots of people in HK will be retiring. That means the people who are now working as entry-level and mid-level employees with good eduction credentials will get promoted. Those who will be retiring will likely enjoy retirement pensions like MPF, and the banks will likely sell their investment products to those seniors. If the demand for wealth management soars, the investment market will certainly boom.
But with regards to PCLL entry, I doubt there will be any increase or decrease in the intake of students because the quota for PCLL place is fixed. Which means a handful of students are still slated for rejection, regardless of school grades and TC. This is the inevitable deadweight loss.

the lawyer field in uk was saturated 20 yrs ago.
unless is a whole bunch of practicing lawyers in hk bought the farm and they wont be increasing the pcll quota.

hate to say this quite often when u talk to a straight A student they're nothing but a stick in the mud.
they know nothing besides what was in the book they have read, they rarely observe what is going on outside world since they can have the total undivided attention to do what they set out to do.
so how would u hire such a person?
then u may have one with less than perfect score he/she has a can do attitude.

jimbo,
That's not really an answer. You'll find many great law students with great marks in the US and Australia who aren't getting a job.
Unless you meant that the benchmark for 'good' will ch ...
