A reflection for March

This forum is getting very slow, so I thought I'd share my March experince to see if we can liven up the place a little.

I had to stop playing regularly due to work committments until the end of Feb...took to the table again in March.

Two-tabling at 0.5/1 to 2/4 PLO at ipoker.  First week was straight-forward, up £2K.  Win tilt started to hinder my progress during the second week, as I dropped back to break-even when moving up to 3/6 and 5/10 after a series of coolers (top set v Big draws, 2nd set plus good draws against top set, plus a few good aces getting cracked after getting it in preflop).  Total disaster.  Up only £100 after two weeks after being up £2K in the first.

Took a day's break to clear my head, started again at 1/2 and 2/4, now 4-tabling after I got a 29 inch monitor.  The bigger screen means its easier to see the action.  It stil took a bit of getting used to though.  I really envy those people who can play anything up to 13 tables, and on a 24 inch screen.  Anyway, 3rd and 4th week was swingy, but nothing out of the ordinary for PLO.  Final result for the month is £4K in profits, and £2K in Rake-back, making a total of £6K profit for the month.

Main thing to watch out for is tilt...either win-tilt, when after a long series of wins, I start to think that I should win every pot, and play ultra aggressive to try and pick up pots, even after meeting stiff resistance.  The other thing to look out for is tilting after coolers/bad-beats.  We can't fist-pump when a fish call/raise our big bets with weak hands, then complain that sometimes they hit.  Or gloat when our nut flush gets called on 3 streets by two-pairs/baby flush, and then start to whine when our nut blocker play gets picked off by those same hands.

Must try to remember that I should not try and out-donks the donks too often, not with very weak hands, anyway.  Also must remember that even if I were to break-even, the RB on 4-tabling should be about £2-3K a month, so there really is no need to get into a stacking contest with very marginal hands, unless I am being bullied constantly.

All in all, a good March.  Let's hope April remains just as good.

2+2 is vastly over-rated as a centre for advice, certain for the lower limits.  They have some strange regulars posting some very strange advice.  I must admit that I dont as a rule read much of the nosebleeds level advice, so maybe they are much better up there.

I normally play about 6-10 hours per day, and although PLO is by nature much more swingy than NLH, a lot of the varience are due to over-agressvive and/or bad play.  We can actually try to keep the swing to an accetable level if we play tighter (both pre and post flop).  Of course there are times where we have no option but to risk our stack, even deep stack, if we are pushed, and we think we have the best hand/draw.

One example is from tonight's session.  Picked-up AAJ9 SS in MP, with two very wild players behind me.  EP raised, and with a stack of +200 BBs, and covered by the two players behind, I decide to see a cheap flop rather than raising and bloating up the pot with a deep stack and two aggressive players behind.

I didnt get that option.  Wild player 1 3-betted, and wild player 2 4-bet from the button, EP folded.  I know most likely that neither of them had aces (they are wild!), and it was a choice of putting in a large portion of my stack passively OOP, or get it in now with the best hand.  I shoved.  Got instant called by AKTJ SS and, wait for it...TQK6 SS!  Flop was AQ6 r, J and 2....what a way to lose 200BBs in a 3 way pot...:)

Another classic loss...AAJK DS in the CO, 3 betted an EP raise.  Flop A83r...got CR by EP, and we got it on the flop...he showed A378 with two BDs...hit runners.  Think I had decent aces about 7 tmes tonight, and got it in preflop about 4 times, while hitting good flops with the others...Lost them all.

But even with that sort of luck, I was only down 9 buyins for the session (US$1800) 4 tabling.  So the swinginess of PLO is big, but not its not as bad as some people might claim.
