This is an ongoing conversation I'm having with another person on my blog. It is a curious conversation.
----------------------
----------------------

Michael:
Should leave the streets to HK Indigenous then, so they can run around destroying businesses by labelling it as freedom.

Yiu:
There had been some confusion to the last strip. I must explain, this comic strip isn't an advocacy for HK Indigenous. It's not about them and I'm not talking about them. That's a different conversation all together. I am talking about society and the danger of calling for its own enslavement.

What I am implying in the strip is that there are courtiers that will utilize every available opportunity to convince the citizens to accept irreversible and repressive draconian measures such as Article 23 by dressing it up as interests of society. When such measures are pass, so too is what remains of law and civil liberty. I am pointing out such a clear and present danger, especially in the light of a very important election on this coming Sunday in New Territories East, Hong Kong.

Michael:
The Chinese communist government is one of the worst in modern history. I can see where you’re coming from. Sadly, there are too many brainwashed people on the other side to really stop this. Which is why groups like HKI which have instigated the violence, have only taken away more freedom from the Hong Kong people.

Reality is, until China blows up from within, the CCP will still be in power. I want change, but I am part of the minority and at the moment now, all dissenters are automatically put into the category of conscientious thinkers.

Yiu:
People are not powerless. Power doesn't emanate out of thin air through the hands of a minority, but it rest in the hands of the majority. It is effective propaganda, the control of opinion and attitude that makes one feel helpless, thus neutralizing the person from his own emancipation. The majority is trapped not by real shackles, because that would curtail real physical movement, but by mental slavery.

Who holds the power? The answer is we do and who are we? The soldiers, the policemen, the merchants, the shopkeepers, the students, the workers, the street sweepers, at the end of the day, the ordinary people constitute the majority. It is through our consent and enforcement that system of power maintain its vitality. No system can function without the consent and participation of the majority.

How do you challenge power? Popular movement must have popular support, the challenge is in uniting the division across society into a single voice. This is never easy. It will take real personal and economic sacrifices. If landlords will forgive the rent, if truck drivers will stop delivering, if dock workers will stop loading, if the police and soldiers will be non-cooperative, if the economy is suspended, people would come out. If we can put away our own divisions, cynicism, ridicule and attack on each other and work toward a common goal. If a city of seven million people and five million all came out to seek economic or political reform, that's real bargaining power -- majority power. The alternative is slavery. Revolution by arms is not the way. War as they say is a failure of diplomacy.

What are power afraid of? The answer is us. It's afraid the people will hold them accountable to their corruption, abuse of power and put them on trial for what they had done.

Michael:
Of course, they are afraid. The issue is, people have been conditioned. They’ve got to this point of “I don’t care”. The who do, either get exiled, killed or incarcerated.

Have you lived in the nation? You can talk about it in secret. You can even talk about it even in public in some point. As soon as you shout it, you are gone. They are not extremely competent by any means but the current situation reflects very heavily on what has happened throughout the rest of Chinese history. As long as the nation is economic going well, and has strong national security, it won’t collapse, no matter how much chafing there is.

The street sweeper, the workers and the ordinary people that you talk of, they think the regime benefits them. As just 20 years ago, they’d have been earning tenfolds less in a farm. The police and the military? They get the most benefits out of this actual regime, they can run rampant with power as long as they don’t opposite central government or become too overt in their hand.
You have noble views, the reality of the situation is much more dire. It’s sickening. The disease needs to become more cancerous and then will the body finally take notice.

Yiu:
Fear and brutality are effective tactics to keep society under acquiescence. There are choices. If people aren't interested in their own freedom, then who is?
