when the electron absorbs certain amount of energy, it will project to an energy level. it is said to be excited.

since the electron is still affeced by the electrostatic attraction, it will fall back to original position , giving out an eoectromsgnetic waves in certain frequency.

when the energy is great enough to escape from the electrostatic attraction, it is said to be ionized.

The first excitation energy and the ionization energy of a certain atom are 21.2eV and 28.8eV respectively. An electron of energy 22.4eV strikes the atom at the groung state.What happens to the atom.
The answer is The atom is excited to the first excited state.1st excitation E = 21.2eV : 只要 electron 既energy夠 21.2eV,佢就會被excited to 1st excited state
ionization E = 28.8 eV: 只要 electron 既energy夠 28.8eV, 佢就會離開個atom依家 electron 得 22.4eV,所以佢唔夠energy離開個atom,但夠energy被excited to 1st excited state.
