Any Canadians here?

I went to High School and University in Toronto, Canada and returned to Hong Kong for work.

I still miss the life / living style in Canada and considering going back. Any brothers have same experience to share?

Not Canadian but American here. If you can't accept the work life in Hong Kong then just go back to where you came from. Heavy work life in Hong Kong is not for everyone.

u went to st george campus?
I used to hang out at Robarts library, Law lib. When I really need to study I go to law lib, folks are more quieter there. Robarts is more of a meeting place.

try to find what you like to do

If you are used to being in a more relax environment, you should go back. But for me, I didn't find much difference between living there (me in Richmond Hill) and in HK.

But Canada has a high tax rate. A car is a must unless you live and work in the city center (which is expensive). Public transport aren't as good as hong kong (in terms of frequency and route).

also party life haha

Thanks all for sharing your experience,  actually I have already been back to HK for quite a few years already but every now and then I have the sudden urge to go back to Canada.

There are certainly advantages and disadvantages on both places...

Yes, living standard in HK is one of the disadvantage compared to other countries.

kobe_dogg 2013-11-15 01:19 AM

TBH it depends on what you're striving for...
If you want opportunities and career advancement and party life, HK is the place to be.
If you want stability, lifestyle and work life balance, then American is the place to be.
Each has their own pros and cons. Depends on what you want at this age and what you can handle.
Do what's best for your future!

Made an account just to contribute :smile_30:

I am in the exact same boat you are.  I also have sudden urges to go back sometimes especially during walks and I start looking around.  Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the busy city life more than a  relaxed suburban (Markham) life, but there's just some strong issues that make me want to catch the next flight back.

I found a job, but if I convert it back to CAD, it's quite pathetic and frankly, I just don't know how I can one day afford my own place at this rate :smile_27: Sometimes, it feels like the party/glamorous life is an expat exclusive club

bjleung120 2013-11-17 09:30 PM

I hear you man...in HK I feel that I am spending more time working than enjoying life....

Canada tax rate is crazy tho

Personally I think HK is losing its edge...not just Salary...also Citizen's benefits and tax rate... in Canada at least I get to enjoy some benefits and not need to worry about retirement as much...

I'm actually thinking of going back to HK. The grass is always greener on the other side eh?

What do you do, if you don't mind me asking?

jimbo86 2013-12-3 12:48 AM

u should if u think the canuckstan's live is too calm, as excited as watching the paint to go dry, your whole flat is too big which enough room to play indoor tennis and floor hockey. Going to work is like driving along a giant parking lot.  And u didn't realize finding work can be very interesting as u compete with 500 other dudes for an entry level job.

I went to Canada 6 years ago for school... After I graduated from College, I decided to stay because I kinda like the life style: slow pace, more quiet, massive space, etc... Also, I am currently working in a resort as an Event Planner... it is so much fun to work with Western people! (Btw, I have 0 Chinese co-worker). And now, I just mailed my application to Canadian Immigration for my Permanent Residence. So, it is all about life style :) I chose to stay instead of going back to HK because HK is too competitive, busy, and crowded. If you do really miss Canada, you can apply one year working holiday visa :)

jimbo86 2014-2-25 04:51 AM

so what coast are u in? or middle of no where? where buffalos & indians roamed.
canuckstan has it good and bad points.
some say is as fast pace as a glacier moves. Or do they move at all.
in hk u can win big, same as mark 6 or 649 every wk there's a winner.

matwxx 2014-2-25 12:29 PM

I am gonna return next year. Living quality is really bad in HK now, especially for those who have to work.

Canada is so fuking cold !! especially East Coast

hugolizard 2014-3-10 08:38 PM

HK is only good if you're in finance. Everything else pays better in Canada. And they work you like a dog here as well. Guys often fight to be the last one to leave the office even without OT pay.

Lau29 2014-3-15 05:17 PM

totally agree!!!!
原帖由 tasmanbay 於 10/11/2013 11:28 PM 發表

idk whether this discussion is still active or not but i'm just gonna go ahead with my questions.

I'm also Canadian but not based in Toronto but Vancouver. I'm still a student in UBC, studying literature and economics. I'm thinking of going back to HK to work after I graduate, which will be a year later. Unlike some of you guys, I came to Vancouver when i was 3 years old and been here since then. However, my chinese is still good given that i went to Chinese school and i go back to HK every year. I have work and internship experience in both Vancouver and HK.

I want to go back to HK as Vancouver is not that different from HK in terms of housing -> i think we are the most expensive in housing than hk? It's quite boring here and work is so chill here that it does not motivate me. Can anyone give me some advice and some career ideas for me?

回覆 #28: Any Canadians here?

Hey. I'm still considered a new member here so I can't send messages. Can you send me your line ID through message? Thanks.
