2 options. which one will you choose?

You are an international student from HK. You just graduated with a BA, BBA or BSc (not a degree that trains you for a specific occupation) from a pretty well known university overseas.

Here are the following 2 options:

1. Continue living overseas because the environment is better than HK. However, you cannot find a stable office job meaning that you may have to remain unemployed for a while or work in the retail/food industry (minimum hourly wage). As a result, your expenses are still being provided by parents who cannot support you any longer. However, you are happy.

2. Go back to HK. You get an office job immediately due to connections. Your parents are happy and relieved as they do not have to pay for your life overseas anymore and that you can make a living now. But you absolutely hate the environment: pollution, the amount of people, lifestyle...You are not happy to be back in HK.

Given this, which one will you choose? I'm interested in what you guys think.

jimbo86 2014-5-11 10:14 AM

it all depends what are your expenses?
sure u need to be realistic as where u eat, live and shopping habit.
few days ago on nyt an article by a  gal who cant understand why her single parent mom had to work two jobs and shop at 2nd hand good will stores for clothes, shoes and everything.

Most of u kids have no idea of how hard to turn a buck!

should u move back to hk u may get a marginal better job than being where u are, nonetheless there're lots of grads who're much better equipped than u and will kybosh your chance for a nice job in hk. unless u have connections then employers will give u a job regardless.

First of all, this is not about me but my friends. They have a car, so gas is a big part of daily life expenses. They still go out pretty often= spending money. They buy things that they like regardless of the price.

If I was put in that same situation (cannot happen on me), I would choose to go back to HK. Even if i'm not happy, I know that my parents are better off as they don't have to carry a burden on them. Also, it's pretty easy to find a normal office job (from personal experience).

I know that each individual thinks differently, but I just can't understand why some would rather put their parents in more pain and for themselves as well by choosing the hard route over the easy route (that is to go back to HK) where it benefits everybody. Perhaps they see something bright? I don't know but from what I can see, they are putting themselves and their family in more trouble as well:smile_39:

hk is kind of on life support from middle kingdom, now as what everybody had prayed for, less folks coming from MK. The real estates & retail both slowing down.
what If the contraction became more severe?
Hk per se doesn't make anything or grow anything. How is it going to sustain the vibrant economy?
No need to be economic experts, as simple as playing mah jong within your immediate family. Today u can win 1000 from your dad, and he won 1000 from mom. Isn't it a vicious cycle? No real $$ generated.
Look at macau their gambling revenue has also slowed down too. The residents can wait for the free cheque next yr from the govt patiently too.

godmars8129 2014-5-12 11:19 AM

Second choice. It's much better than the first one. Everyone need money to maintain a stable life.
If u n ur family have some saving, then choose option 1.

I hate the pollution here too, but I choose to live in Hong Kong. Just because of the food. I am thinking of moving to Taiwan now. I can work in many countries. But I personally don't want to work for any companies in Europe or US.

You have to accept the conditions if you want to stay and work in HK.

jimbo86 2014-5-12 01:13 PM

some say hk folks are moving to TW as its cheaper to live.

Not cheaper. Because people are nice to each other. I feel it's better than Hong Kongese.

i am sure taipei's realestates is probably as expensive as hk.
middle & south should be more palatable.

now the  economic contraction will no doubt make a whole lot of folks feel butterflies in their stomach. probably similar high or buzzed from a toke or getting ready to step up to the bungee jump platform.

OR you can live in Tai Chung. Cheap to live. Live in Tai Chung, Work in Taipei.

my co-worker from tp, she said when she was in high s, her school was close by that street rendered famous by the hk 5 dragons. as they all spoke canto there.
during the 60s many failed hk bizmen hide out there in exile. simply due to no extradition treaty between hk and tw.
is`close enough for fnds to visit them , should they have any left.

I would stay and trt to make a living for myself.  Depending on where you are and how you spend your money, even minimum wage will suffice.

Work a little while and and see if there really is a future.
If there isn't, then go back to Hong Kong.

some kids spent their last 4-5 yrs learning how to spend $$, speak chinese 99% of time,  sing K , holed up in china town.
So u think they can find work in an all white environment? And washing big plates in chinatown is not exactly aspiring.
I see so many kids here that only go outside after the clock strikes three in the afternoon.
One was outright comical, should have videoed him, he had to bring his gf's dog to get beautified. So he had to drive his GF to the pet salon. I can see his hair were all squashed flat as if he had just rolled out of the bed.
He is not hurting too bad as they had just left a sports car with a hood ornament of raging bull.

they have done nothing but wasted their precious time here.
And their parents with ultra deep pockets are not doing them any favors.

Some resort to sell their bodies or drugs.

Or else they would never let u to go to school far away to study.

i would not dismiss them as stoopid ppl. they still have a right to live  and enjoy better life. Should some of us offer some better guidance to them , their lives can make a big difference.
I succeed simply because some folks out there encouraged me one time or another. Some for sure one cannot help.
Perhaps when u live in hk, as its a dog eat dog world, should u help your friends then your chance of success could diminish too.
And sometimes is pretty sad to see kids just going around in circles.
Only find out when its too late in life.

at least u can return or move to another more advanced country.
future of Hk is really up to everybody's guess, 1/2 empty or 1/2 full.
There're folks who have made several buckets of gold and many walked without shirts behind their back.
I have been spending more time outside , it would be real hard to come back. Some of the boarded room tenements were kind of unreal, at least is better than a caged bed.
In life we need contingency plans what if this or that  happens?

Yea I think what you are saying is on the spot. The person made their decision already and that is to go back to HK. It's better for their family. Decisions all depend on what you prioritize the most and in this case, they placed family first rather than themselves.

in fact is happening everywhere.
one day a fnd pointed a gal at the food court , she is a kept woman, as he had been to his condo, he said this gal has tons of LV & name brand bags all strewn on the floor.
I dont think he has any funny relationship with her though since he may have deep pocket but don't think he's that dumb.
Grewing up in HK I have heard it so many time, ppl laugh at poverty but not at body to exchange wealth.
I don't look down on these ppl, at least they earn their keeps honestly with work.
Is a fair exchange.
