Anyone thinks that the British English is difficult to understand?

I grew up in Toronto and I have a hard time understanding my colleague who is from UK speaking English during the meeting. I also cannot understand Indian speaking English.

Anyone feels the same?

ya they kind of sound like sending paragraph or some kind of percussions, i am used to their accent.

Not at all.  I am generally good at understanding other accents.  Unless it is cockney or something like that

Cockney is still alright.  Liverpool is the worst.

i dont think they're anything close to the real british accent or real mCoy.
east indians can come from many areas, the indies, India, africa, islands, fiji,
etc.
Don't forget the brits took them everywhere.
Mr. Ghandi spent sometime in Kenya practiced law there.
If u ever listen to the beatles speaking u be surprised how they sound.
Sometimes i find it hard to make out where these white folks came from too, they could be kiwi, oz, South African or the old blighty. i always ask them.
And some been in canuckstan for so long that they lost a lot of their accent.

Just take time in listen to them , if missed u can politely ask them to repeat.

Toronto by & large has fewer east indians, but seems to have more africans though. Many came from the islands and some came long time ago from the underground railroad. That was pre-civil war era too. Many settled in the east coast maritime province.

I always have problem when they shake their heads while saying yes at the same time.

jimbo86 2014-6-6 01:23 PM

cockney is kind of minorities isn't it?
they have to live so close the the bow bells of London

the worse offenders were those computer supports who were routed to India  and they do sound like some kind of Jamaican steel band playing.

Speaking of British accent, it's nothing compared to Scottish accent.

Back in 2002, I went to see Sweet Sixteen, a movie from Scotland, here in San Francisco. To my surprise they put on English subtitle. Apparently someone was clever enough to notice that Americans will have a tough time understanding Scottish accent.

Understandable English

North American English is far more easy to be understand.

I've spent 3 years living in the South (Mississippi) and I absolutely love the Southern accent.

Depends on which part of Britain they're from. I cannot understand a word Fergie says, but I could understand my professor, who is from Essex, perfectly.

But god damn, fuck the Indians, especially those on the phone. I nominate them to be one of the worst speakers of English.

jimbo86 2014-6-10 03:19 AM

on the phone is much harder as u dont see their facial expressions, sometimes we can guess a bit.

Fenlius 2014-6-10 05:54 PM

For me, yes. Very difficult. But I am not very good at speaking nor listening. Unless they speak very clean and clear English like a TV anchorman, I can't understand a single word otherwise.
