原Nokia CEO,現微軟硬件部門負責人史蒂芬·埃洛普近日對英國《金融評論》表示,微軟不會在手機硬件的泥淖裏苦苦掙扎,他們要靠服務(如Bing搜索等)來賺取利潤。這番言論似乎能解釋這部在印度進出口網站Zauba上出現,代號“RM-1099”的低價微軟手機,它僅3,489盧比。RM-1099將是一部4寸WVGA顯示屏雙卡手機,配備高通雙核處理器、1GB RAM、8GB ROM以及200-300萬像素后置攝像頭。媒體普遍認為,微軟此舉意味着要藉助這些更低價的智能手機,來消化殘存功能手機份額,拉高Windows Phone的市場佔有率,“以設備換服務"。

微軟實施免費策略後如何營收?Freemium商業模式

過去一年間微軟的軟件發展策略迎來重大改變,面向PC和手機廠商免收Windows和WP系統授權費用,在競爭平台iOS和Android推廣免費的Office套件,收購免費的移動應用,這一系列免費策略的實施都幫助微軟贏得了市場的肯定。但縈繞在我們心間的問題是,假如微軟產品線全面採用免費策略,那麼微軟的營收從何而來?而答案就是Freemium商業模式。

Freemium商業模式就是通過免費服務吸引用戶,然後推出增值服務,將部分免費用戶轉化為收費用戶,實現收入的增長。微軟傳統的營收主要依靠銷售類似於Windows和Office等軟件,面向OEM廠商和企業收取授權費用。今天在亞特蘭大召開的2015年會聚大會(Convergence conference)上,軟件市場營銷負責人Chris Caposella全面公開了微軟的Freemium商業模式。


整個商業模式劃分為四個單元,acquire, engage, enlist和monetize。其中在acquire環節主要利用免費策略吸引消費者使用,其中最佳的例子就是iPad上的Office應用;Engage則是微軟不斷深化產品和消費者之間的關係,並作為整個步驟的重要環節,保持用戶繼續使用這項服務;enlist環節主要就是挖掘重要消費對象,而最後的monetize則是向這些用戶推廣收費訂閱版本。這聽上去有點簡單,但是事實上微軟此前也進行了這方面的嘗試,但是效果並不是太明顯。

長久以來,微軟的一大部分收入來源就是Windows和Office軟件的銷售,但在谷歌以及蘋果等公司軟件免費策略的逼迫下,微軟現在正面臨著極大的壓力,尤其是用戶的流失對微軟來說是絕對不能忍的。

為了改變這一現狀,微軟痛下決心,將拋棄目前的軟件收費策略。日前,微軟一名高管證實了微軟未來的軟件業務營收戰略——免費增值模式。

所謂“免費增值”模式,即向普通功能的用戶提供免費使用,面向付費用戶推出高端、附加的功能。免費增值模式在遊戲行業最為普遍,而在移動互聯網時代,越來越多的公司和APP採取了免費增值模式。

具體來說,微軟就是想通過免費軟件來獲取用戶的認可,進而在這些軟件上推出高級付費功能,鼓勵一些粉絲用戶轉移到收費產品上。

不過有觀點指出,微軟的軟件免費化和免費增值模式,其實主要面向個人和家庭等消費市場,在佔據優勢的企業市場,微軟仍將整合軟件和技術服務,採取收費戰略,這也將是微軟未來最重要的收入支柱。

進步太慢,微軟該開放Windows Phone了

Windows Phone的發展形勢似乎越來越好,不僅手機廠商中興重新回歸Windows Phone陣營,開發者似乎也開始對Windows Phone平台開始感興趣,有報導稱,明年將有三成開發者考慮進駐Windows Phone平台。

但近日cnBeta上另外一則新聞引起筆者註意,該篇報導指出諾基亞目前已佔Windows Phone市場90%的份額,對於微軟而言,這篇報導初看似乎是一則好消息,主要原因是:微軟目前已收購諾基亞,而諾基亞手機份額佔市場份額的90%,微軟現在終於可以高枕無憂了,因為它成了Windows Phone市場的主導。

但有心的人只要那麼深入一想,就會發現微軟的處境並不太妙,因為這樣的一家獨大並不是好事,這證明其它手機廠商要么沒盡力,要么說明已經沒有廠商願意跟微軟玩了……

至此,這也引起了筆者的興趣:Windows Phone生態系統是否依舊不行?如果這樣,微軟該怎麼辦?

Windows Phone進步依舊很慢

根據IDC此前的統計數據顯示,自去年算起,雖然Windows Phone在2013年第三季度市場份額增長已達156%,並且在有些國家(意大利)和地區Windows Phone份額甚至都已超過iOS,但Windows Phone全球總體份額仍然偏低,只有可憐的4.1%,而在北美智能手機市場,Windows Phone佔有率依舊停留在2%。

其次,儘管微軟在21日宣布,Windows Phone平台應用下載量已達30億次,這數字表面看起來很不錯,但遠低於蘋果iOS平台的逾600億次,

這樣的數據,對於一款在2012年6月就發布的系統來說,所取得的成績依然偏低,進步依然太慢。

慢?那就要狠一點——開放Windows Phone

Windows Phone的成績依然偏低、進步依然太慢,那微軟該怎麼辦?按照從小就被灌輸的常識,如果成績不行,那就需要發憤圖強、加倍努力,不過對於微軟而言,實際上它已經很努力了,除了繼續加強自身平台建設外,還有沒有別的途徑?

條條大道通羅馬,有,肯定有!筆者的看法就是:徹底開放Windows Phone。看到這,或許有的讀者疑惑了,什麼叫開放Windows Phone?難道Windows Phone不是免費的?另外微軟有開放Windows Phone的必要嗎?

首先回答上面自設的問題,是的,Windows Phone的確不是免費的,每出售一台Windows Phone手機,對應的手機廠商就要向微軟上繳相應的授權費用,無形之中就推高了Windows Phone手機的價格,降低了其競爭力。那什麼叫開放Windows Phone?開放Windows Phone就是徹底免費系統,然後讓廠商有自定義系統的權利。

看到這,或許很多人想吐槽筆者,甚至有的人一笑嗤之,不論怎麼樣,先請別先急著關閉網頁,是不是謬論,請繼續往下看。

微軟為什麼需要對外開放Windows Phone

微軟為什麼需要對外開放Windows Phone,主要原因有以下三點:

1.不能既當裁判又做運動員微軟需要藉開放“坦誠”

2.微軟需要迅速提高市場份額,而開放是必然之舉:

3.不開放Windows Phone,微軟將會在可穿戴時代繼續失利

關於第一點,在微軟收購諾基亞之前,微軟只是個系統供應者,因此包括三星、HTC和華為等第三方廠商並沒有太大的擔心,而現在微軟不僅是系統開發者,又是手機硬件的製造者,因此這勢必會嚇跑其它手機廠商,而開放Windows Phone則是“坦誠”之舉,至少能讓其它手機廠商在一定程度上放心微軟會一視同仁。

關於第二點,國外媒體《連線》曾撰文指出,在移動平台上,蘋果和谷歌操作系統同時存在只是歷史偏離正軌的結果,實際上平台之間的戰爭總是帶有一種贏家通吃而輸家一無所獲的傾向,因為如果有足夠多的人使用某平台的話,那麼會形成一種漩渦,強迫幾乎所有人都使用這個平台,這是什麼道理呢?其實這主要是當有一定用戶基礎時,就會吸引開發者,使之願意為這個平台開發應用,而開發者願意開發又會進一步吸引用戶,從而讓開發者願意投入更多的精力開發精品應用,而這則會進一步吸引用戶從而形成一個良性循環。

想想科技界增長最快的系統Android,五年時間發展10億用戶,因此在歷史還沒回歸正軌之前,微軟通過開放來吸引用戶則是必然之舉。

關於第三點,繼智能手機之後,下一個時代必將是可穿戴設備綻放光彩的時代,但大家有沒有註意到,可穿戴設備總是配著智能手機在使用,而這也會使得哪個移動平台大,其對應平台的可穿戴設備也就多……微軟已經在移動互聯網時代失利了,如果不開放,它還想接著繼續在可穿戴時代失利嗎?是的,如果可穿戴設備流行,憑藉微軟目前生態系統的建設情況,下面肯定是沒有它什麼事了。

公司性質,決定微軟必須開放

微軟不是蘋果,它的產品走大眾化路線,這也註定著微軟無法像蘋果那樣,向用戶提供獨一無二的體驗,因此收購諾基亞後的微軟,就算向蘋果看齊現學現賣,也無法向用戶提供差異化的體驗,因此,微軟如果維持現狀不開放Windows Phone,或只會讓Windows Phone淪落到被邊緣化的地步。

其次就目前形勢而言,移動系統早已是Android和iOS的天下了,如果微軟再不發力,那麼羸弱的市場份額,則會讓Windows Phone陷入一個怪圈:市場份額低——開發者不願為Windows Phone開發應用——應用少——用戶​​不願使用WP——市場份額低。

因此從微軟公司大眾化的性質和目前形勢來看,這也決定著微軟Windows Phone必須開放。

開放能給微軟帶來什麼?

開放的好處再多,如果不能給微軟帶來實際利益的話,那這篇文章所講的東西都將沒有意義,因此Windows Phone開放,都能給微軟帶來什麼呢?

1.開放或能讓微軟繼續定義移動計算:未來很長的一段時間,用戶的絕大部分計算都會轉移到移動設備上,如果微軟不開放,不把握住這一趨勢的話,將會徹底失去競爭能力,這就如同Windows軟件定義PC時代一樣,開放Windows Phone或能幫助微軟定義移動計算。

2.開放將推動微軟在線服務發展:開放的Windows Phone必將吸引眾多廠商參與,這其中也將包括一些小廠商、甚至中國的山寨廠商,這些廠商的參與能夠為微軟迅速提高用戶基數,而這些用戶基數則會為微軟在線服務帶來機遇,比如說搜索引擎Bing等。

3.開放,能為微軟帶來殺手級應用:對於微軟來說,Windows Phone平台目前非常尷尬的一點就是,缺乏像Google Now這樣人工智能上的殺手級應用,如果微軟開放Windows Phone的話,所獲得的用戶將能夠提供大量天然的數據,從而為微軟研究智能而又人性化的殺手級應用提供基礎。

4.開放,能為微軟帶來更多的收入:開放後,微軟雖然失去了系統授權上的費用,但它能從生態系統中獲得更多的收入,比如通過Windows Phone應用商店的分成(用戶越多,所得分成的收入將會越高)和銷售內容賺錢,除此之外,微軟還可以更多地去挖掘生態系統方面的服務去賺錢,比如雲服務等,要知道時代又變了,未來企業將不能靠軟件賺錢(軟件只是實現企業差異化的手段之一),而是依靠其硬件以及所提供的服務賺錢。

最後:現在才開放Windows Phone,是否太遲?

不少人都在質疑,移動平台已被Android和iOS主導,微軟是否還有機會?實際上,只要微軟願意開放,一切都還不遲。為什麼這麼說呢?

原因有以下幾點:

1.與PC時代相比,開發工具的改進使得開發者有能力為多個平台的設備開發應用

2.如果微軟真的開放Windows Phone,請相信二線、三線智能手機廠商以及中國山寨廠商的能力

3.功能機用戶依然眾多,他們向智能手機設備轉移時,用戶學習和適應的熱情依在

4.相比PC,用戶更新智能手機的頻率更高,其次用戶轉換平台的成本也開始下降,而這使得微軟的Windows Phone依然還有很大機會

Microsoft Expert: Windows Will Become Free for All Sooner or Later

Microsoft has started a never-ending debate with its free Windows 10 promo, and now everyone has an opinion on the way the software giant should market the new operating system.

While the company has said it clearly enough - Windows 10 will be free for users with valid Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 license (and not for pirates) - some experts believe that this is only the very first step towards making the operating system completely free of charge for absolutely all customers, no matter if they are end users or businesses.

Al Hilwa, analyst at technology research firm IDC, says that at some point enterprises might simply refuse to pay for Windows 10, so Microsoft might not have any other option than to offer Windows free of charge for them too, in an attempt to maintain its market share.

Other sources of revenue

If that happens, Microsoft could start looking for other sources of revenue, the analyst says. Windows is no longer the number one cash cow for Microsoft, as Office is the main division that brings home the bacon, so Redmond is more or less covered if it decides to make the operating system available free of charge.

In addition to Office, the analyst believes that Microsoft will also focus more on Surface tablets, which are growing in popularity thanks to their 2-in-1 configuration. A new Surface model should launch later this year with Windows 10, and more sizes are expected as well, including a smaller version specifically designed to be used as a note-taking device.

Advertising and cloud will continue to play a key role for Microsoft, but if the company decides to make Windows completely free of charge, the company could start looking for more effective ways of generating revenue and enterprises again would be the ones targeted.

A future with a free Windows version indeed sounds good for users across the world, but Microsoft doesn't seem to be ready for such a significant step just yet. But the new OS is still in development right now, so anything could change before RTM is reached.

金融時報:Win10特赦盜版折射微軟謀轉型

英國《金融時報》文章稱,微軟如今的處境實屬不易。Windows是這個商業帝國的根基,而該作業系統應用於個人電腦的版本的價格在不斷下滑。同時,PC市場停止了增長。關注微軟的分析師們頻頻下調該公司營收預測。

如果這種情況持續下去,會出現甚麼結果呢?倘若PC版Windows的價格降到了零呢?據Stifel估計,目前Windows售價在35美元左右,但看來它正朝著零的方向下滑。微軟本周宣布,使用盜版Windows 7或Windows 8系統的中國用戶今年夏天將可免費升級為正版Windows 10。中國有數億Windows用戶,其中3/4用戶使用盜版Windows。

Win10來的太慢:2015年Windows市佔率將慘跌

微軟對PC市場的控制在日漸松動。市場研究公司Technalysis新發表報告稱,按出貨量計算,微軟Windows作業系統在全球PC市場上的占比將低於90%。Technalysis預測,今年Windows作業系統在全球PC市場上的市佔率將由去年的90.4%下降到88.7%。在Windows市場佔有率萎縮的同時,蘋果Mac和谷歌Chrome OS的占比則在上升。

Technalysis估計,今年蘋果Mac電腦在全球PC市場上的市佔率將由2014年的6.2%上升至6.9%;Chrome OS占比由去年的2.2%上升至2.9%。

到2020年,Windows在全球PC出貨量中的占比將下降到86.7%,Mac OS占比將上升至8.6%,Chrome OS占比將上升至3.6%。Linux將占領其餘的1.1%。

2010年時Windows占比為94%,其次依次是Mac OS(4.1%)、Linux和其它作業系統(1.9%)。2009年發表的Chrome OS當時在市場上還沒有形成影響力。

名為Chromebook的Chrome OSNotebook在學校中非常受歡迎。市場研究公司Futuresource Consulting當地時間周三表示,去年在美國,Chromebook超過蘋果iPad成為教育市場上的第一大攜帶型計算裝置。2014年Chromebook在教育市場上的市佔率為39%,iPad市場佔有率為26%。

Technalysis分析師鮑勃?奧都耐爾(Bob O"Donnell)當地時間周四在一份聲明中表示,平板手機(顯示螢幕尺寸為5吋及以上)銷售的增長對PC市場有利。他說,平板手機一直在蠶食平板電腦的銷售,人們“重返”PC,以獲得大螢幕幕體驗。

奧都耐爾說,“隨著更多的人使用更大螢幕幕的智慧手機,他們對平板電腦——尤其是小尺寸平板電腦的興趣在衰減,為PC市場提供了復蘇動力。”

奧都耐爾指出,截至2018年底前,PC出貨量每年將穩定在略高於3億臺,部分原因是Windows10的積極影響以及企業持續的采購。微軟排程今年晚些時候發表Windows10。

WP手機專注低端的原因


我相信不少人,特別是Windows Phone用戶,都跟我有一樣的困惑。

昨天,微軟又面向新興市場國家推出了一款低端手機——Microsoft Lumia 430。過去的好幾年裡,諾基亞一直致力於推出Windows Phone低端機,產品線多到連Windows Phone粉絲都數不過來。微軟收購之後又延續了諾基亞的路,冠以微軟Lumia品牌名稱的手機已經推出了6款,依次分別為535、532、435、640、640XL和最新的430——除了640XL之外,其他統統都是低端機型,售價從幾十到一二百美元不等。

去年年底微軟曾經公佈過一組數據,當中顯示71%的Windows Phone應用下載來自低內存設備,自證了本文標題中的觀點。很明顯,低端機在一些對計算力要求相對較高的使用場景當中表現讓人不滿意,而貫徹移動為先雲為先發展戰略的微軟,其推出的應用在自家平台上反而比Android和iOS上表現的更糟糕。這樣的話,消費者又憑什麼要購買微軟力推的低端Windows Phone呢?

究竟為什麼,讓微軟如此執迷於推出低端Windows Phone機?是複演​​諾基亞功能機的歷史嗎?誰能看得懂微軟的這盤棋?

1.高端聲量劣勢

微軟前兩天在深圳WinHEC 2015大會上宣布了和包括聯想、小米、BLU、龍旗等在內的中國OEM、ODM的合作,但直至目前,Windows Phone智能手機除了微軟並無他人在做(HTC 、華為等公司目前都已經暫停了Windows Phone手機產品線)。而在智能手機行業裡,微軟Lumia這個品牌和主要競爭對手蘋果、三星(甚至包括過去的小米)不一樣,它在高端產品上沒有足夠的話語權。

這就導致了微軟Lumia以及過去的諾基亞Lumia在高端手機的推出上極為謹慎小心。好比一場文藝到爆的電影,通常是叫好不叫座的。過去諾基亞推出的高端Lumia手機的確很好,大家也都很期待未來的新款旗艦,但問題是新旗艦不一定賣得好。有史為證:到目前為止,Lumia系Windows Phone智能手機裡銷量最高的仍然是諾基亞Lumia 520和它的二代530。

2.摩爾定律保駕護航

為諾基亞和現在的微軟Lumia堅定不移走在低端Windows Phone手機道路上保駕護航的,正是摩爾定律。

芯片巨頭英特爾的創始人戈登·摩爾曾提出,集成電路上可容納的晶體管數量每兩年會增加一倍,而英特爾CEO大衛·豪斯則將其解讀為18個月翻一番——用人話來說,消費者用同樣的錢買到的手機,18個月後的性能將達到現在的兩倍。

在現階段,數碼設備的計算能力隨時間增長的幅度,比其價格隨時間下降的幅度要小,這就是我們開始看到越來越多的旗艦手機價格越來越低的原因之一。

諾基亞前高管,現在微軟大中華區擔任要職的司瑞凱(Srikanth Raju)對記者透露了微軟的真實想法。

“高端和低端的設備之間,一旦形成了性能的不斷翻倍,價格不斷降低的話,它們中間的缺口會越來越小。所以在不遠的未來,你將能花很便宜的價錢就買到很高端的設備。”

現在的高端機,不出一年時間就能變成屆時的中端甚至低端機,微軟很清楚的明白這些。它推出的手機大多是兩三年前旗艦硬件配置,搭載在極低配置下也能保證基本流暢運行的Windows Phone操作系統。這是微軟移動保持繼續出貨的穩妥之道,而下面的這一個原因將證明這條道路對於微軟來說​​是正確的。

3.下一個十億人:Windows 10許諾低端機一個新未來

地球上有70億人,只有30億人每天使用互聯網,佔總數的40%。幾乎所有全球級別的大型互聯網科技公司接下來的發展規劃都是同樣的:搶占下一個十億人(The Next Billion)市場。

下一個十億人在哪?在印度,在中國(金磚四國),在廣袤的非洲大草原和沙漠中,以及人口密集的南美都市裡,這些國家和地區被統稱為新興市場國家(Emerging Markets)。為了讓這些市場當中的消費者連接上網,科技公司們各自進行著自己的努力。有人造無人機,有人在平流層搞Wi-Fi熱氣球陣列,有人努力演進出全新的通信制式,而有人在努力地造出這些消費者能消費得起的智能手機。

微軟正造手機的人當中最激進的之一。

如果你也一直關注Windows 10,你會明白微軟正在下的這一盤棋。Windows 10的互操作性、對於智能設備的適配性史無前例得高,大到企業集成操作系統,中到PC、平板電腦,小到智能手機,更小到物聯網設備當中的單片機甚至是一個傳感器,一套內核的Windows 10都可輕鬆應對。說白了就是:為PC開發的Windows 10軟件可以一套代碼直接在手機上跑,因為他們根本就是同一個軟件。這極大地降低了Windows 10軟件的開發門檻,提高了Windows 10設備(手機、平板、PC)之間的協同工作變得更好。

在這方面,只有蘋果的Mac OS X和iOS之間的Continuity有機會媲美,而統治絕大部分全球移動設備市場的Android則根本看不到微軟和蘋果的尾煙。Windows 10運行所需要的計算能力比Windows 8更低,任何從硬件上能帶的動Windows 7的PC都可支持。而剛發布的這款運存只有1GB,售價只有70美元的430(不含稅約合人民幣430塊,也算是巧合)手機,一樣可以升級Windows10。

與此同時,低端Android智能手機運存低於1 GB根本沒法用,iOS8的更新則停止在了iPhone 4上——蘋果從來沒打算對過時的低端機繼續支持,他們的首要目標是銷售更多的當年新產品。除非再繼續推出iPhone n“c”這樣的產品,否則下一個十億將和蘋果無緣。

我的同事名揚曾經總結出智能手機行業的三大黑暗法則:規模效應、摩爾定律與生態鏈效應。其實你可能已經註意到了,我將這三大法則套用到了上面的三個小標題裡,因為它們正是微軟專注低端Windows Phone手機的背後驅動者。

Microsoft executive shares Microsoft’s plans for competing with Google and Apple

When it comes to connecting services, Microsoft does pretty well. However, according a Microsoft executive, Chris Capossela, the company’s competitors, Google and Apple are doing better than Microsoft. Chris stated:

 

“It’s just a little snapshot in time. It’s not the end-all, be-all.  I don’t want to reorganize everything around this. But it’s an interesting piece of data. It shows you that we’ve got a lot of big businesses at Microsoft.  Windows is big, IE is big, Office is big, et cetera.  But it also shows you that we don’t have nearly the connectivity between our products that Google has engineered and that Apple has engineered.

If you look at what Apple advertises on TV, at least in the U.S., it’s all iPhone and iPad. And yet you see all the lines that connect their ecosystem. They can focus their marketing dollars on a very small number of things, be very disciplined, but because they’ve engineered their things to work together, one product naturally leads to the next product without any marketing at all; very efficient marketing to build your marketing into your products.”

Microsoft, however, has plans to change this “in a big way,” according to Chris. As an example, the executive talked about the OneNote integration on Surface Pro 3, Bing integration on Cortana and Skype on Outlook.com. Chris also stated, “The beautiful thing about having lots of lines is that you don’t have to market all of your products. You only market the locomotives. And then when someone uses your locomotive, it pulls along the cabooses.”

 

Chris also explained Microsoft’s new strategy to the crowd at the Microsoft Convergence conference in Atlanta. According to Chris, the company is currently focusing on the freemium strategy. He explains how freemium strategy helped the company to gain more Office customers:

 

“We weren’t making any money on Office on the iPhone or on Android phones, and we’ve had over 40 million downloads of the Office apps on those devices. And if you think about the Office business, we do roughly 70, 75 million copies of Office a year.  And all of a sudden in less than a year we have 40 million more downloads on phones that weren’t running Office. Amazing.  Like that’s just a total mindbender in terms of opening up your mind to a different business model that your marketing can really help you advance.”

 

Microsoft has already showed off some of its new integrations between its services. For example, the company integrated Cortana on its upcoming browser Project Spartan.

Free Windows 10 to Help Microsoft, Not Partners 




Microsoft will offer Windows 10 as a free upgrade within the first year after launch for PCs powered by Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, and everyone expects the market share of the new operating system to skyrocket very fast in the first months of availability.

Obviously, a free upgrade for Windows 10 is pretty good news for users worldwide, but it's not all just milk and honey for the rest of the Windows ecosystem.

Partners believe that offering Windows 10 free of charge to computers that are powerful enough to run Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 could have a strong impact on new PC sales, as the majority of customers would upgrade their devices instead of buying a new one.

In the past, whenever Microsoft introduced a new version of the Windows operating system, manufacturers worldwide expected to record increased new PC sales because the new software usually required upgraded hardware, and customers rushed to buy computers that could cope with requirements.

Unchanged system requirements

But this time, Windows 10 has pretty much the same system requirements as Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, so computers that have been purchased in the last 5 or 6 years should all be able to run the new operating system pretty flawlessly.

Here are the system requirements for Windows 10, as provided by Microsoft for the Windows Insider program:

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster
RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
Free hard disk space: 16 GB

And here are the system requirements for Windows 8.1:

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2
RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

Surprisingly, Microsoft already promises that, together with Windows 10, manufacturers would bring out a new wave of products, including desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Of course, devices would be there, but it still remains to be seen whether customers worldwide would actually buy them.

Obviously, it also comes down to costs, and Microsoft already has a plan to bring more affordable devices to the market, including a Windows 10 with Bing edition that would be offered free of charge to a number of OEMs.

In addition to the partnership with Samsung, Microsoft today announced that they have also signed strategic agreements with leading global OEM Dell, and regional OEMs including TrekStor of Germany, JP Sa Couto of Portugal,Datamatic of Italy, DEXP of Russia,Hipstreet of Canada, QMobile of Pakistan, Tecno of Africa, and Casper of Turkey, as well as top original device manufacturer Pegatron. These 11 hardware partners will pre-install Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive and Skype on Android devices coming to market later this year.

 

For OEMs, these deals will increase the value of and enrich people’s experiences on Android devices. Original device manufacturers are important because they extend Microsoft services to the ecosystem. More specifically, they help to reach a greater number of other device manufacturers, resulting in even more choice for customers around the world. And for Microsoft, this is part of the company’s mobile-first, cloud-first vision.  It is addressing consumer demand for top services by making them already available on a device, instead of requiring consumers to download them separately.

30% increase in Office 365 subscriptions shows bright future for Freemium Innovation

Yesterday we wrote about some marketing tactics Microsoft was looking to explore in their journey to polish their brand image. One of those tactics mentioned was embracing and cultivating a Freemium Innovation pattern. According to Microsoft’s Chief Marketing Officer, Chris Capossela, adopting the Freemium Innovation spirit means offering innovation and functionality that coincides with flexible tiers of pricing. Microsoft is shifting their blind flat-rate licensing approach when it comes to consumers these days. Instead of paying for bundled functionality and services users may never use, many of Microsoft's services are now offering free previews.

Naturally there will be challenges for both Microsoft and consumers in adjusting to this new approach, but it looks like Office 365 is quickly becoming the poster child for Freemium Innovation. Office 365 has helped Microsoft adapt to an influx of distribution while also addressing the way people are now using office. Kirk Koenigsbauer, corporate vice president of the Office 365 Client apps and services team says, “Since the Office for iPad announcement last March, we’ve worked hard to bring the power of Office to every person, across every platform and device, so people can get things done on their terms,”

Microsoft is quickly finding out that lowering the barrier to entry with a free tier, exposes more people to the innovations the Office team is bringing to an area where people are increasingly gravitating. This news has also led the Office team to investigate the best method of converting those users beyond their one device. With subscriptions to Office 365, users can extend their value of Office 365 beyond their desktops, tablets, phones and to cloud storage or international video conferencing. Kirk  and the team claim, “That’s why we’ve seen demand for these premium consumer subscription services grow—Office 365 Home and Office 365 Personal grew to more than 9.2 million subscribers in the last quarter, up 30 percent.”

As much as this is news is great for consumers, we have to realize that much of Microsoft’s money is made in enterprise. Kirk and his team also have to address how Freemium Innovation affects their much larger enterprise install base. As slow as industry appears to move at times, consumers and IT pros move much faster. Having a Freemium model in place for customers would naturally invite“innovative” ways for IT Pros to engage with Office 365.

Kirk addresses these concerns as well, “In the professional world, we’ve approached things differently. These users require more than simple apps: Organizations need an integrated product suite. They need security and reliability. And most of all, they need to be able to get things done, wherever they are".

Serving professional users on a subscription-only basis makes sense, because of those extended needs, and the resulting product categories and licensing models for business customers are a key element to Office 365 experiencing phenomenal growth. As more companies take Office to the cloud, commercial seats for Office 365 are up 88 percent from a year ago.”

Kirk and the office team are looking forward to the changing landscape of technology. He and the Office team see this as their showroom for Office. With the likes of the Samsung and Dell agreements, it is apparent that the Office team is much better prepared to execute on Freemium Innovation.

Windows Phone OEMs and differentiation


Windows Phone is – in the public eye at least- just Lumia. There are 20 odd other OEMs in the ecosystem who make Windows Phone devices at least once a year, and I do not care about many of them.

This isn’t privilege speaking, or not recognising the economics of third party OEMs. It is simply that these devices are unremarkable in many ways. Blu, Freetel, Yezz all these are Windows Phone OEMs which have pushed out unremarkable low-mid-end devices for example. These OEMs are also capable of releasing high specced devices. And they do, just not for Windows Phone.
Now some people may argue that Windows Phone runs smoothly on the low-end and it doesn’t need high end specs, I disagree. This myth needs to die a horrible death. Either there is some magical low-end device these people are using that I have not come across, or its simply not true. In my experience, from the 620 to the 535, the experience may be acceptable but it certainly is not the smooth as butter experience apologists tout.
The importance of high-priced, high-end devices goes far beyond sales and profit margins. People perceive price as relating to value,and more often than not they are right. A device like the iPhone 6s or the Galaxy S6 and S5 may be high priced, but they’re also equivalent in specs to some other devices. What sets these devices aside is that the price adds other things to the device that you can’t find on the spec sheet. Design, R & D costs for future improvements, top of the line components and more.

For the manufacturers, they cast a halo around their other devices. “If the Galaxy S6 is awesome, then the Ace 4 has to be good as well relative to price”. Without a top of the line device to compare with or cast a halo around your products, the lower end products are in effect left to sell on their own merits.
To go back to Windows Phone OEMs, the Lumia 520 and 635 sell because the 1020, 920 and 930 project a brand image that will carry down to the lower devices. The Blu Windows Phone brand and the Xolo Windows phone brands cannot survive without a flagship product and a strong brand identity. Without a raison d’etre to sell to consumers, without a reason to actually think of their brand, they will stay at the bottom of the market. If they are unwilling to invest and create a viable brand for their products (Yezz Billy? Really?), then they must be content (and I suspect they are) with sharing 5 percent of the Windows Phone market among themselves.

The next part of this is software. One former Phone OEM has complained about Windows Phone not being customizable. This is especially odd as Samsung, HTC and Nokia(then) were able to create unique experiences on their own Windows Phones. OEMs can change for instance, the camera app – important for many users, create a custom music player (many users would have appreciated it), an alternate messaging app that leverages local messaging services and SMS among other customizations. Changing the user interface is an exclusively android esque thing, and Android OEMs get docked points for that so much that “stock Android” has become a selling point. If you must customize, but cannot find anyway to do without changing the look of the OS for no good reason, then you’re in the wrong business. If a feature is missing from the OS for a product you want released, Microsoft has previously worked with OEMs to adapt the software, that is not an issue.
Combine good hardware and good software together and you can sell to people who appreciate good products. Make mediocre products, and you’d get mediocre sales. Not every one wants 50 different low end HTC Ones.

If OEMs only push out devices for Windows Phone that no one buys, or that they don’t want to sell (at least two OEMs advertised their Windows Phones with Android screenshots), then they only have themselves to blame.

There’s So Much Love for Windows Phone in Some Countries: Microsoft Releases New App Stats

Windows Phone was, is, and will continue to be the third most popular mobile operating system after Android and iOS (at least until Windows 10 comes out), but app statistics provided by Microsoft today show that adoption is on the rise in several countries.

Both Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 have been getting more and more users lately, as everyone is preparing for the free upgrade to Windows 10, and Microsoft says that both “have been the primary operating systems over an extended period of time.”

Graphs provided by the software giant indeed show that Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 are driving most app downloads these days, but in the case of the smartphone platform, Windows Phone 8 is still alive and kicking for now. Its share, however, is declining, and the same trend is expected to continue in the coming months, as we move closer to the release of Windows 10.

Low-memory devices for the win

In the last few months, Microsoft has been mostly about budget Windows Phone devices, so the only flagships on the market continue to be the Lumia 1520 and Lumia 930.

App download statistics show that 68 percent of the downloads that were made between January and March 2015 happened on low-memory devices, whereas only 32 percent were performed on high end devices.

Games is still the top app category in the store, whereas Tools & Productivity, Music & Videos, and Social are also following up closely.

“Since we began posting these trend updates, we’ve seen categories and rankings become fairly stable. The main exception has been the Games category for Windows, which continues to grow and now accounts for over 45% of windows downloads,” Microsoft says.

And last but not least, there are countries where Windows Phone adoption is on the rise, so they lead the app download charts this time.

For example, the United States is currently the market with most downloads on both Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1, followed by India, Brazil, and Vietnam. It’s pretty obvious that Microsoft’s efforts to bring more affordable devices to the market are paying off, so the company might be playing the winning card here.

Windows 10 for phones is expected to arrive in the second half of 2015, but it’s not yet clear whether Microsoft plans to release it together with the PC version of the new OS or soon after that.

Why Microsoft Doesn’t Want to Kill Windows Phone 

It’s a well-known fact that Windows Phone is well behind Android and iOS in terms of market share across the world, and it’s also no secret that several experts and analysts recommended Microsoft to simply give up on its mobile platform and concentrate on what it does best.

But there’s no doubt that Windows Phone is here to stay, and with Windows 10 Microsoft is getting even more serious about its mobile efforts, with the company trying to bring together all of its platforms.

And as far as a former designer who worked for Windows Phone is concerned, Microsoft not only that doesn’t want to kill the smartphone OS, but it also needs it to continue its mobile push because, as he said in anAMA on Reddit, a small market share is better than nothing.

Right now, Windows Phone has somewhere between 2.5 and 3.0 percentage points in market share, according to various research firms, but Microsoft needs to keep Windows Phone alive because they have to compete in the mobile OS market as well.

“Windows Phone is small, relatively speaking. But absolutely speaking it still sells a lot of units. And they can’t not have an OS. So it’d be nice if they had more market on mobile, but having zero just topples the whole strategy,” he said.

Windows Phone 8.1 devices will be upgradeable to Windows 10

When Windows 10 will become available later this year, Microsoft will allow all devices running Windows Phone 8.1 to install it at absolutely no charge, with the company saying that handsets with 512 MB of RAM would support the OS with some feature limitations.

This is needed because of the obvious hardware restrictions created by the reduced amount of memory, but no matter the device, everyone should be able to experience the new operating system when it launches.

According to AMD, Windows 10 is likely to debut in late July, with some sources saying that RTM is scheduled for June. At this point, it’s not yet clear if the phone version can launch together with the PC flavor or shortly after that.

Microsoft CEO says Office has been downloaded 100 million times on iOS and Android

Microsoft has gone from being a software firm, to a devices and services company, to one that's now focused on 'mobile first, cloud first'. From developing almost exclusively for Windows back in the day, the company is now fully embracing a cross-platform future, making more of its products as widely available as possible.

Office is among the many productsthat Microsoft has brought to rival platforms over the last couple of years. Yesterday, after the companypublished its latest quarterly financial report, its CEO Satya Nadella revealed that Office has been pretty successful so far on iOS and Android, as Mobile World Live reports.

"We are clearly taking Office everywhere," he said. "Core to our mobile first strategy is to ensure that our service end points are on every mobile device, and to that end, we have seen continued momentum with more than 100 million downloads of Office on iPhones, iPads, and Android tablets."

Microsoft hasn't given up on its own platforms and devices though. Nadella said that the launch of Windows 10 this summer "will usher in a new era of more personal computing." But he also added that it will be "an era where the mobility of the experience, not the device, is paramount."

While Microsoft is certainly betting big on Windows 10, and investing in more of its own devices like the recently-announced Surface 3 tablet and a new generation of Lumia flagship phones, it seems clear that the company sees its cross-platform strategy as the surest path to long-term success.

微軟和亞馬遜傳出的信息:雲時代來了

By going low on hardware specs but high on performance delivery, Microsoft had made it with the Lumia535 in market penetration where it's already matured with Android and Apple mobiles.

It will require a long period for Microsoft to do much bigger in delivering high specs hardware to consumers who are hungry on such demands.

Right now, the Lumia 640 and XL had proven itself to be the best in VFM budget handset category. Sooner or later, you may see bigger penetration of these models among phone users around u.

Microsoft's transformation isn't just words, we're now seeing the action

Microsoft keeps telling us its transforming, becoming something bigger and better than ever before. This past week shows that this isn't just marketing talk, and that we're ultimately the ones to benefit from this.

Just before Build 2015 began, I had the privilege to sit in on a special presentation by Microsoft's General Manager of Developer Experience, Bryan Biniak. He was speaking to a room full of press from all over the world, gathered for the annual IFA Global Press Conference weekend, this year in the sunny climbs of Malta.

It was a big deal for the event, as they'd never had Microsoft on board as a partner before. But after the presentation, and now after the Build day 1 keynote, the puzzle pieces of Microsoft's ambitious plans are starting to fit together.

I'll admit, it's very easy to hear the talk and mark it down as an elaborate marketing strategy. But there were a couple of key quotes in last weeks presentation that make more sense than ever before after the Build keynote.

"If it touches a consumer, a business, we want to be there"

"A key thing since Satya Nadella came on (as CEO) is building bridges, opening up Microsoft software and services to everyone."

And that's exactly where we're going. On a consumer level, Windows 10 will be on everything we use to work and play. Which other company can boast the same software running on a mobile device as on a games console? The Universal App Platform, carrier billing, unified store. Everything, everywhere. A truly unparalleled experience.

For developers though, the bridge building is going far and wide. Microsoft is openly welcoming Android, iOS and web developers to Windows 10. 'Empowering' each of them to leverage their already completed hard work and open up a new userbase and revenue stream where once they may have stayed away. New tools for developers using Mac OS X and Linux, too. Areas once out of reach brought to Windows 10.

The app gap is one of the Windows followers favorite topics to talk/complain about. It affects us all. Personally speaking, Pocket Casts closed my own app gap a little further this week, and the developers support for the platform is welcomed. No-one likes not being able to use the things their friends all talk about, or moving from another mobile platform to find their favorite apps just aren't represented. It sucks. Microsoft knows this.

But one thing that can no longer be intimated, is that Microsoft is lazy. Microsoft should be doing more to get xxx service (insert Snapchat where appropriate) onto Windows and Windows Phone. With the new developer tools announced at Build, Microsoft is doing about everything it possibly can to get things rolling. Whether it works, maybe we'll consider that more in 12-18 months from now.

So, empowering. Consumers, developers, creators, Windows 10 looks to have something for all of us. Microsoft is ever changing its business model, with one of the biggest the offering of Windows 10 as a free upgrade for the first year. It's opening up new revenue streams to become less reliant on the likes of Windows to make its money.

微軟一直在告訴我們他們在轉型中,正在成為一個比以往更偉大更優秀的微軟。過去一周我們明白了他們並不是在紙上談兵,我們確實是微軟轉型的最終受益者。在Build 2015大會開始前,筆者有幸參加了由微軟開發者體驗部門經理Bryan Biniak主持的特別演講,和我一同出席的還有前來參加IFA(柏林消費電子展)全球新聞發布會的世界各地媒體人。IFA展會將於今年今年9月4—9號在柏林展覽中心舉辦。 這對IFA來說是一次大事件,因為他們之前從來沒有與微軟達成過夥伴關係。但在IFA全球新聞發布會演講及Build大會首日主題演講之後,微軟雄心勃勃的計劃終於初現雛形。我承認,其實我們很容易就能將談話內容記錄下來後將之作為一個精心設計的營銷策略。但上週演講中的一些關鍵語錄在Build主題演講後其非凡意義才更為凸顯。

即便它只觸及一位消費者,一項業務,我們也想要實現它。 自從薩蒂亞·納德拉上任以來,搭建橋樑及將微軟軟件 &服務開放給每個人就成為了一項關鍵任務。


那就是微軟的發展方向。在消費者層面,Windows 10將與我們工作和娛樂的一切息息相關。還有其他公司能讓相同的軟件同時運行在一款手機與一款遊戲主機中嗎?通用應用平台、運營商計費、統一化應用商店等等都造就了一種真正無與倫比的體驗。 對於開發者而言,正在構建的“橋樑”將更寬闊,也將觸及更遠的地方。開放的微軟歡迎安卓、iOS與網頁開發者來到Windows 10 ,為他們每個人的辛勤成果輕鬆“嫁接”到新的平台,幫助他們迎接之前未曾觸及到的新用戶並同時增加收入。微軟為開發者提供的新工具還支持Mac OS X與Linux ,讓曾經遙不可及的事物來到Windows 10 。應用缺口是Windows粉絲們經常談到/抱怨的話題。它影響著我們所有人。就我個人而言,我所喜愛的應用《Pocket Casts》也在本週登陸了WP平台,開發者對WP平台的支持也受到了用戶歡迎。沒有人喜歡聽身邊的朋友討論一款自己無法使用的應用,也不願意轉移到其他平台才能找到它們最愛的應用。這種感覺非常不爽,微軟也清楚這一點。 微軟還應改掉自己“懶惰”的壞習慣,微軟還應通過更多手段將多種服務(在適當的位置嵌入Snapchat )遷入Windows與Windows Phone平台。隨著全新開發者工具在Build大會的現身,微軟也在盡其所能地讓事情朝好的一面發展。至於該方案是否奏效,可能要到一年或一年半以後才能見分曉。綜上所述,這次微軟已決心將“予力眾生”的戰略奉行到底。消費者、開發者、創作者及Windows 10看起來都與我們有著千絲萬縷的聯繫。微軟也正在轉變其商業模式,而Windows 10第一年免費升級的政策就是一個典型例子。微軟正在謀求新的收入來源,而不再像以前那樣過於依賴Windows為其創收,這也將讓所有人受益。
