Jenson Button is to remain with McLaren for the 2016 Formula 1 season, ending recent speculation about the veteran driver's future.

Button had suggested following the recent Singapore Grand Prix he lacked "joy" in driving these days given McLaren-Honda's woes this season, prompting talk the 35-year-old would retire at the end of this campaign.

But following recent talks with McLaren Group chairman and CEO Ron Dennis, Button has decided to continue with the team next year.

Button, with 279 grand prix starts to his name, said: "Over the past month or so I have done quite a lot of thinking, and it is no secret that I was at one point in two minds about my future.

"But I have been a McLaren driver for six seasons now, and in that time I have got to know Ron very well.

"He and I have had some very good chats these past few weeks, and during those chats it has become clear to me that Ron is both utterly determined and uniquely equipped to lead our team through its current difficulties to great successes in the future.

"That gives me great confidence, and it is for that reason that, together, he and I have decided to continue our partnership.

"As soon as I had made that decision, straight away I realised it was the correct one.

"OK, granted, this year has not been an easy one for us, but we know what we need to do to improve things.

"In collaboration with Honda, we will work extremely hard over the next weeks and months in order to make sure that 2016 will be a much better season than 2015 has been."

ORIGINAL DEAL STANDS

Dennis remarked over the Japanese Grand Prix weekend that talks with Button had removed doubt from his driver's mind that he remained a wanted man by the team.

"Jenson and I have been discussing his plans in private for the past few weeks, and the fact that our talks have led to today's announcement is very pleasing to both of us and will delight and motivate all at McLaren-Honda," he said.

"As I have made clear whenever I have been asked about the subject, Jenson's current contract is of two years' duration.

"There is a 'terminate after year one' option that McLaren could have triggered if we had wished to do so, but once it became clear from my many conversations with Jenson that he remained as enthusiastic and as committed and as focused as ever, that option immediately became an irrelevance.

"That being the case, Jenson will race for McLaren-Honda next year, under the terms and conditions as set out in the two-year contract that both parties entered into a year ago.

"I am extremely pleased. Jenson is the most experienced driver currently racing in Formula 1, and next season he is due to become only the third driver [after Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher] in Formula 1 history to pass the milestone of 300 grands prix.

"Although that wealth of experience makes him a massively valuable asset to our team, hugely expert in all aspects of the 21st-century Formula 1 driver's craft, he is also supremely fit and as super-fast as ever."

Good to see all the analysis and information in this forum. Started watching formula 1 in this year due to Mclaren-Honda.
In my humble opinion, I think Jenson was trying to gain his bargaining power in his future.
Ron Dennis told Sky sport after Japanese race he talked to Jenson about the contract on Thursday before race, since that he merely mentioned about the contract because the contract is 2 years and option of termination. He doesn't think that Jenson should be worried about the contract. If he knows that affects a driver's confidence in that way, he should make the call before Thursday.  It makes sense that Jenson's attitude  changed in the press conference in Japan compared to Singapore. In fact, if I remember, Ron Dennis has mentioned the contract of Jenson in Spa. He told Ted (Sky Sport Reporter) Jenson will be racing in 2016 season for sure. I know it might be PR stuff, at least we confirmed that Jenson will be racing in 2016.
Sometimes, media misunderstood and misled people on so many levels. For instance, Arai told media that Honda's power unit will be as competitive as Ferrari in Spa. It turns out Arai mentioned the ICE output will be as competitive as Ferrari but not the entire Power unit.
The problem of Honda's unit attributed to ERS (Energy Recovery System) that cannot maintain long enough to have extra 120Kw (160HP) during the race. Honda now is focused on 2016 engine because of the restrictive regulation, they cannot change their layout with current regulation. Yesterday I saw some video about Arai, he has mentioned the new engine layout will be seen in winter test as they already working on it, and it might implied they already got the layout on the right track.
Please bearing with my English, somehow I cannot really use Chinese input in my laptop.

kazaf08 2015-10-1 19:54

Thats so true. I should edit in previous post as I mentioned Jenson trying to gain his bargaining power in his future.
I don't think that Jenson is an idiot. Mclaren has 4 drivers including Alonso, Jenson himself, Kevin magnussen, and Stoffel vandoorne.

Kevin has stated very clearly he 'must be' racing in 2016 and won't be a sitting duck. On the other hand, stoffel has great results in GP2.

Media rumored Stoffel will be racing in formula 1 and Mclaren also stated they will try their best to help 2 drivers getting seats in 2016 if Alonso and Jenson remain.

The problem is Jenson really did not know the thought of Ron Dennis. He can terminate the contract with option and get either Kevin or Stoffel into F1.

Plus, two drivers has been through those races in 2015 with flawed engine, which lack of power and reliability, that frustration will hit really hard.

You can see that Alonso tried to be diplomatic in the front of media saying like 'We learned every race and analyze the data, to improve and develop next race'.
Last week, we heard Alonso saying 'GP2 Engine and embarrassing he got passed by Max while he saw drivers behind him made mistakes and get passed him in the straight not even in braking point.

The frustration is built in days. Jenson and Alonso are frustrated in the performance. Alonso has signed 3 years contract which he got to stick with it while he needs money to build his bicycle team.
However, Jenson has doubt that should he stick with Mclaren in the future with lack of Honda's power? These sort of things would lead a different act in his decision.

Obviously, Jenson has been convicted by Ron Dennis and performance next year (I guess Honda has showed something interesting to Jenson in Japan and raising money in his contract).
It is all about playing cards and tricks. If I might say, Jenson won this game but playing a very dangerous game when Ron Dennis can replace him with Kevin or Stoffel.

Anyway, what I am trying to say is what Jenson is playing a game that could gain his power to negotiate the price and further details of the contract. He is not an idiot at least he has played and survived this sport for almost 15 years.

My apology if you are confused in this post. I typed what I have in mind without organizing.

Here is what Martin Brundle wrote:

Jenson Button won his game of "brinkmanship" with McLaren after securing his seat at the team for 2016, according to Sky Sports F1's Martin Brundle.

McLaren announced on Thursday that Button would be staying at Woking into a seventh season after they decided not to activate the break clause they had on the two-year contract the 35-year-old signed last December.

Button had appeared ambivalent when quizzed about his future in recent weeks and newspaper reports ahead of last weekend's Japanese GP had suggested he had decided to retire, with an announcement possible as early as Suzuka.

It is thought that the second year of the contract Button agreed contains a clause to increase his salary to £12million and that McLaren, set to take a financial hit on the back of their worst season in 30 years, were keen to start negotiations for 2016 afresh.

However, announcing Button's position at the team for 2016, Ron Dennis confirmed that the former world champion would be staying "under the terms and conditions as set out in the two-year contract".

Reacting to the news, Sky F1 pundit Brundle said: "It's very good news for F1 and the British fans.

"I said on Sky F1 last week that he didn't sound like someone who wanted to retire because if you want to stop there is no team on earth you will prevent you from retiring. They may try to ask you to sign a contract to say you aren't going to drive for somebody else because a few people have tried that little trick to get out of a contract.

"But Jenson's still clearly got the speed, he's held his own against Fernando Alonso this year.

"I think it was brinkmanship frankly on the financial side and to get the terms right. These decisions don't have to be made until the last minute and Formula 1's such a fast-moving business there's no point in taking early decisions.

"So clearly whatever he was seeking to get, he had a contract in place and they had an option and I'm pretty sure they tried to reduce his salary and other bits and pieces, he's won through. The team have got a new sponsor and it's so important for them to have somebody like Jenson reaffirming that he believes in the future of this once great team."

Button had made clear that he would walk away from F1 if he didn't stay at McLaren, with the 15-time race winner having been linked to the World Endurance Championship and various TV work.

Brundle believes the veteran successfully convinced McLaren's management that he had the required desire to extend his F1 career into a 17th season - and that his continued presence acts as a boost to the struggling team.

Take a look at Jenson Button's current career highlights after McLaren confirm he will stay at the team for 2016

"It works for both of them, frankly, to have a world class driver like Jenson. The sponsors like him, the fans, the TV stations, everyone likes Jenson," Brundle added.

"He's a good character and clearly gets the job done on the race track. It was important for both of them provided Jenson wanted to carry on. I've known times in the past when I was a driver or when I managed David Coulthard, you would never give a hint of any idea that you might be thinking of stopping because the teams would question your motivation and might be concerned that in big side-by-side moments out on track or in the pouring rain on the difficult tracks would you still have the desire to press the throttle a little bit harder rather than the brake pedal?

"Jenson's obviously satisfied the team he did want to carry on, he just wanted the right terms."

And while Button may already be the most experienced driver on the grid and second oldest behind Kimi Raikkonen, Brundle says there is no question that the 35-year-old remains as fit as ever.

"I have no doubt about it. These drivers now are super fit, the cars are strong - they haven't broken lots of bones, they're not wrecked. You seem them running triathlons as well as driving grands prix," the former McLaren driver added.

"They are mentally and physically completely under control and able to drive an F1 car that's not as demanding as it used to be. The F1 season is not as demanding as it used to be because there isn't testing between races. I think he mentally and physically has no problem going forward."

"My head knows but my mouth and tongue doesn't know," Button said. "The joy of being in the car is only there if you're fighting at the front, because you feel like you're achieving something.

"If you're fighting near the back, you're driving an F1 car, but you can easily get joy driving something else. The joy you get is from competing. It's about fighting at the front. It's about the possibility of standing on top of the podium. That's the joy of F1."

McLaren with Ron Dennis as t ... [/quote]

"Button同Ron dennis我就覺得超樣衰,一個屎忽鬼唔想俾錢,一個自己話冇joy唔想玩f1!" - 哈哈, Ron Dennis willing to pay UK12million to have him stay so I guess Button is worth it too.

:loveliness:  It is all circumstantial.

I respect and is a fan of both Alonso and Button, both a worthy Champion.

好笑得過我哋呢班 fans 自己 argue 餐懵啦; 我哋知 F1 條鐡咩:loveliness:  As to money is everything, littleap 師兄係咪冇打工嫁?:loveliness:

littleap 2015-10-2 00:23

It is emotional and I can't really talk about it this weekend'.
