Any regret on moving back to HK?

I've been living overseas for most of my life and just moved back here recently. The HK working culture is something I'm still trying to get used to, especially the 少做少錯、唔做唔錯 one. Anyone out there has similar experience?

I felt the same way when I was an intern in HK during summer...People are so grumpy all the time...:smile_13:

No. I am glad i never consider going back to HK. From what I have read, it is the right decision, particularly for my kids.

I'm in IT.  Hope it'll work out better for you.

Is that a government job?

Money7 2017-8-14 11:28 PM

Haha, I wish.   Just a small branch office of a foreign company.  I wouldn't mind working for the government though, they get decent raise each year.

and attractive pension plans too...

Yeah, it's an old Chevelle SS. Saw a few of those new Mustangs 5.0 on the street here, I think it's catching on.

To be fair, can't blame them.
Most of them have extremely long working hours, surely they are less inclined to take on more duties.

Datsang 2017-8-21 04:00 AM

That said, if you can offer them some incentives, bonus or partnership, you will get a better response.

I just recently moved back to HK after spending two decades overseas. I had an expectation about the hours and the people here so I am ok. No regrets from me...so far

I'm also in IT and considering moving back to HK soon. Is the market here getting worse? Or just the culture is bad in general?

Market is getting slow, more jobs are shifted to mainland where I feel people are more aggressive.

I feel quite regretful for moving back here...Unprofessional work environment, passive corporate culture, extremely small living space and super crowded streets...really wanna leave immediately...

Yes

depends on what you position yourself.. if you are workaholic, hk is one of the best place to work in..
but the ideal situation is... you can enjoy where you live or work, or you are able to make the choice if where to go..

sonicjet 2017-12-13 01:56 PM

I don’t regret it and it is the best decision I have ever made.

I worked as a warehouse worker/sales in oversea. My first job in China/HK was already in management position. After few jobs changes, I finally joined a US company hired me as a GM and helped them solve their problem/monitor the operation in China/HK.

My suggestion is to find a job in HK that related to your experience/culture to your home country.

honkiekin 2019-8-23 11:39 PM

The working culture depends on the company policy and thus affecting employees' attitude of works in HK. The top management in the company actually controls everything and makes people only do things what he/ she wants. So, it really depends on the thinking from the top management/ Boss. I've heard that some Bosses will just appreciate people do things right at the first time, which I think it is quite unreasonable if the employee should complete new jobs/ tasks perfect without any experience and guidance. That finally results in a phenomenon that no one want to take up new tasks or else you may be at risk.

In fact, no one can change the situation if the top management/ Boss doesn't want to change the thinking.

This depend on how the supervisor guide the new comers,  you can make your own decisions/ideas but you must take up all the side effects induced, just fair deal. If u can foresee the problems caused and avoided, why not?! Change should be step by step.

I visited HK back in June, right before the protests (incidentally i left the day it started). The place is so crowded, and the traffic is so awful that i probably will never move back. I also read and heard about the horribly tiny living space. I do not think i can get use to a home without a garage, a yard, and decent amount of living space anymore.

The money is what pains me.... I'm getting half of what I was making in the US.......

Moving back to HK for employment?  HK is literally one of the worst place to live comparing income vs cost of living.  The standard of living is awful.

I travel to HK for visit relatives once in a while and even that I can't wait to get on a plane to leave.  I arrive excited and happy, leave feeling emotionally stressed and culturally shocked.  And I am a HKer myself.  :smile_27:

why do u feel upset w the government ?

"The grass is always greener on the other side". Don't you agree?! We stand on this side and looking at the other side, we only see the good of the other side, and completely ignore the bad of the other side, when we finally get to the other side and see the bad of that side, we miss the other side. And the cycle repeats. Yes. Long working hours, horrible work culture, unfair pay scale, crowded city with a reckless government. I agree. But, the good thing about Hong Kong is, you don't get to experience racism just like when you live in other countries, like Untied States, Australia, UK for instance. You don't have to worry about being looked down by other people, or being looked differently by other people because of your skin color. And that's the good about Hong Kong.
