DANCE REVIEW[/color][/b]
NEDERLANDS DANSTHEATER 1 dance performance on 11thNovember 2017 at Kwai TsingTheatre Auditorium. NEDERLANDS DANS THEATER 1 is an international and populardance organization, which was found in 1959 by [url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Harkarvy]BenjaminHarkarvy[/url], Aart Verstegen andCarel Birnie together with a group of 18 members of the Dutch National Ballet.Their aims are to break the rules in traditional ballet dance, to develop a newperforming dancing form, new idea and techniques of combining ballet andcontemporary dance elements.
In the programme, the four minutes of‘Shutter Shut’ by Sol Leon and Paul Lightfoot was amazing and surprised theaudiences. It was remarkable and memorable. Sol Leon and Paul Lightfoot were so cooperated, theykept in step with each other and also to the background music. The backgroundsound is a monologue, a lady was speaking the phases rapidly and repeatedly.The phases were actually a poem ‘If I told him: a completed portrait ofPicasso’ (1923). Two dancers, one male one female, wore a simple dance cloths,Paul wore the dancing trousers of black at the front and white at the blackcontrasting with Leon’s white in the front and black at the back. It wasimpactful and eye-catching. And the background sound started, they used theirwhole body to make the interesting movements uniformly like shaking their head,twisting their hands and bowing. The gestures or movements were clear andduplicable, however, it was not easy to do like that as so orderly, efficientand beautifully. In one session, they were dancing like ‘mirror and shadow’,they danced together with some ‘interaction’ in that session. Moreover, theexpression of the dancers were impressive too. They had well controlled ontheir face muscles and eye-contact with each other and also the audiences. Audiencescould not move their sight on them, too compacting and engaging, like a puppetshow, very impressive! A very unconventional and amazing dance form in thissession.
Another very astonishingsession is ‘Safe as Houses’. The Choreography is Sol Leon, Paul Lightfoot. The musicare the traditional selected pieces from Johann Sebastian Bach, like the Sarabande.This session is mainly to share and explore a message of ‘the soul in life anddeath’. It was a big white rotating wall on the stage, it kept rotating. The dancerswere dancing front of the wall, appearing and emerging, appearing and emerging.They wanted to send a question to us ‘how long does a soul exist?’. This isinspired by the Chinese book of Changes I Ching, accompanied by the Bach music,east meets west. Following by the rotating wall and well training and excellentdancers, the image was really attractive and amazing! Audiences can appreciate theirgestures, movements in their solo, duo and dance group. The dancers not onlyuse their foot work but also use their arms, elbows, shoulders, fingers, palms,hips, or even their face expressions to show their dance. All audiences werewatching on the stage and could not move on their sight on every dancers. They dancedbeautifully, and the rotating wall made the performance more exciting and fierce.This session requested each dancer has merit time management and implicitrecognition of each other, as they cannot make mistakes in this session.
NDT1 certainly isone of the best contemporary dance company, do doubt that they deserve thishonor. They do not have varietal, fantasy or luxury decoration or apparel orstage props. The best and the biggest attraction are the dancers themselves. However,audiences should be pay attention and try to think deeper and reflect theperformance. As they want to give us the message and reflection, not only justa dance performance.
