You could try reading books on syntax.

narius 2018-6-12 07:23 AM

Personally, I wouldn't bother.

Language proficiency is about common usage. You cannot learn to read and write like a native by reading some rule books.

Starting reading novels. Heck, non-fiction will work too but may be it is less fun depending on your preference.

"Heck" is basically an exclamation .. short for "what the heck!". I am surprised you have not heard of it on tv before.

I just finished David Weber's latest Honorverse novel (Uncompromising Honor). As of all Weber novels, it is on the long and slow side, but it does have some really clever space battles. And the last 1/4 has some big shocks and has a much fastest pace.

I have also finished the whole "The Expanse" series, patiently waiting for the 8th book (coming this Dec). It is simply the best, most realistic (up to a point), space opera. And i am really glad that Jeff Bezos rescued, personally, the tv show. The tv show is very well made, but it did take some creative license to condense the characters and plot. In fact, it is rare that I enjoy both the books and the adaptation equally.

For non-fiction, i skim-finished (guess what that means .. hehe) "Academically Adrift" .. basically a sociologist take on why college students are not really learning much, unless you are in a technical discipline. I am also reading a nonlinear dynamics book, and a fluid dynamics book just for the heck of learning some new math. My son is going in that direction has a little to do with that too.

Lastly, i am still on the recent Jack Campbell novel (books 2 of The Legacy of Dragon series) .. and I think i have two more of his recent novels to catch up on.

Prof, You are reading so many books.

I tried to read few sci-fic novel but couldn't finish any of them. I found them very difficult to understand and unable to visualize the scenes described by the authors.  I guess other than language problem, I'm also lack of imagination. I only finished reading 4 American novels, Rooster Bar, Origin by Dan Brown and Night Show & Two Kinds of Truth both by Michael Connelly.

Prof, you can see I am more interested in suspense, detective and legal stories.  Other than John Grisham, do you have any recommendations?

narius 2018-6-13 09:33 AM

To be honest, novels are like TV ... a 100% non-productive of time but I am too hooked to stop. So reading a lot of novel, to me, is not really different than watching a lot of tv. I actually have to ration my time between the two (sooooo many good shows). I suppose they help to relax my mind though. Non-fiction is a bit more useful because sometimes i usually learn something.

Sci-fi is not for everyone, and there is certainly no shame to read what one likes. For example, my wife loves Jane Austin and I cannot stomach any of it.

If you are interested in detective fiction, i would highly recommend Agatha Christie. I read all her work when I was in high school. Her stuff is old school but awesome. She is not called the queen of mysteries for nothing. If you like locked room, mind twisting stuff, try John Dickson Carr (he also wrote under the pen name Dickson Carter). I have not found any modern mystery writers (except some Japanese, but we are talking about novels in the English language here) that can hold candles to the old masters.

If you like modern thrillers, i would start with Tom Clancy. Clancy passed but he had authored quite a volume of work. His work is pretty good way up to Executive Orders. Anything after is pretty crappy. Mark Greaney wrote the best Jack Ryan novels after Clancy. His own work, The Gray Man series, is also pretty good. I would go with Greaney if you like spy, assassins, and stuff like that.

I have read some Scott Turow long time ago. He is no where as good as Grisham but worth a look if you have finished everything Grisham has done.

BTW, if you are really into it, you can try writing a novel, not just reading. I actually have two colleagues (full-time scientist/professor) who have written novels!! One of them wrote a mystery (in Chinese no less) and the other a sci-fi novel. I actually wrote a two page book review for my friend .. just for the heck of it. So if you like books, be a little more active and write something.

Thanks a lot.

You are certainly right that novels are for leisure times.
