Why not watch something simplier?

his speech reminds me those life leadership /life coaches pyramid scheme... annoying af,

He is a bit too earnest and the stories a bit too contrived. He is no better, or worse, than some of the business or academic types that I know.

And certainly i have heard better stories (that try to make a point).

I like that. Watch more shows, and memorize a few lines from it. It helps in 2 ways:

1. When you speak with foreigners, you can say the exact same line to team and see how they react. If they laugh, it might hint that you got it right. If they are somewhat confused, you might have screwed up.

2. It helps you learn English faster than simply memorizing words that you may never get to use, so keep it all practical and have fun with it. Language is not a dead art, breathe some "life" into it.

I may have missed a few other points here and there, but I like your method.

Suggested correction ... watch more GOOD shows. Don't memorize the cringe-worthy ones.

Here is an example. "“I’m haunted by the kiss that you shouldn’t have given me. My heart is beating, hoping that that kiss will not become a scar.”

Ew .. no sane person talks like that. Extra credit for those who identifies the reference.

let me guess, fifty shades?

I mean, with that level of passion and intimacy between the lines, your audience must be your wife, gf, or fk buddies, whatever.

Know your audience first before experimenting with any line.

Sorry ... no extra credit for you. Star Wars prequel between Anakin and Padme. It was awful. But I think the point is that real people do not talk like that, even between partners. I hate it when the screenwriters are trying too hard. Dialogue has to sound natural. Natural and wit are not mutually exclusive. One example of good writing is the debate between the heores in Cap American: Civil War.

That is why i worry about people trying to learn from movies & TV shows. You go with the wrong one, and you sound funny and artificial. The strength of the guy in the video is not that he is slick, or witty, but that he is genuine and he believes in the message. That cannot be faked, or learned. You just have to ... believe.

hmm that was trying too hard at screenwriting.

Perhaps, I should add that learning through the scripts in movie/TV shows can help you get in the door of English learning. The actual learning happens when you communicate with people in English, where context, atmosphere, and audience determines what is the most appropriate thing to say. This takes real skills and well..practices. Your belief statement happens when you are already at the level when English has become a part of you.

I would not dispute that .. and certainly a decent choice if you have no other alternatives. But if you can spend some time over here, why bother watching tv when you can talk to real people?
