2H.

In a good day, you partner may pass with a 11 HCP hand with 4 cards support, like

K987
A543
876
A9

Especially your opponent didn't raise the 2D, if your partner has a good hand, his diamond must be long and thus the club would be short. (Partner must also has spade length unless West holds 5-6 spades, which the probability is low)

For the bad, worrying X -3, I think the risk is not that high, since you have KJT in heart, and you are the forehand of the 2D opener. Therefore, KJT can help you to catch the honour of West.

The diamond K might be a drawback to bid here, but at the balancing position bidding with an opening hand cannot be known as a fault. Also, don't think this K must be useless. At least it could break the tempo of being forced trumps. (Consider you have 32 in diamond, opponents can force you to use the trump very easily, but now your RHO must use an entry to force your trump.)

To conclude, with a good position and a fairly good combination of hearts, I choose to overcall 2H.

Okay.

Now the chance of 4H is low since the partner didn't support. Moreover, having insufficient HCP and with some wastages in diamond, 5C is not my cup of tea.

I am only struggle in choosing 3C and 3NT.

Before telling you my choice, I want to introduce a concept.

Some would say that, having stopper like "K2" is not enough to play 3NT, we have to ask the opinion of the partner by bidding 3D. I simply disagree.

For a NT contract, one of the major concern is the position of declarer. And letting the long suit holder to lead is always the road to succeed.

Consider

Qxx

K2

If you are the declarer, no matter East lead A or small (Assume he hold AJxxxx), your K and Q can win. However, if lead from the West, East can simply see the action of North, if North covers, East wins with A and force the Q out. If North plays low, East ducks to let Q win and drops the K in the second round.

See the importance of the position?

Even you are holding Q2 or J32, you still have to be brave to bid 3NT instead of 3D.

Consider

A3

Q2

Again, let the weak opener lead can give you two tricks or another opponent an entry, while let the partner be the declarer would promptly lose the control.

To conclude, you are in the critical point and cannot push the ball to the partner.

For this hand, the only point to consider is where you have sufficient time to built your tricks.

If your partner has stopper in diamond, it has nearly made as you have much tempo to built your club and hearts. (Note there is a threat when encountered a spade lead)

If your partner doesn't have it , HCP would be concentrated in club, probably. If your partner also has spade K and 6 cards of club, you would have 2 spades, 1 diamonds and 6 clubs. If your partner has heart A and club AK, you may hope for a correct finesse in H. That means, even though your partner doesn't have diamond stopper you still have chance to make the contract.

From the odds, I would be aggressive and bid 3NT.

ninjablack 2007-10-29 11:16 AM

agree with BeSmart, 5 lvl contract is fat chance and for some unlucky conditions, 3C would be the best contract
but 4H would not be a bad landing IMHO
the condition of making 3nt would solely rely on the success of running club suit (dun expect too much on ur p's D)
but as hands listed by BeSmart for making 3nt, we can see if p is holding 2 cd H, the chance of making 4H isnt that bad

If your partner doesn't have it , HCP would be concentrated in club, probably.
red case, losing 1D, and still 2 losers affordable (H and C)
blue case, 1D,1S and 1H(?) depends on the playing of H suit
of coz, we needa take the risk of C ruff

playing a 5-2+ fit 4H here is not a bad try when concerning the insufficient stoppers in D

nevertheless, i would choose 3nt 1st at the table coz love playing 3nt :P

thatz why i think 4H is not a bad landing and if defender choose a passive S lead, it may arouse some problem

just my "boiling gene" prefer 3nt only :P

I also agree 4H is a reasonable choice, but there is not sufficient room for me to ensure partner has a fit. (2 cards of H doesn't guaranteed). Because of this, I dare not to bother trying and simply bid the 3NT.

(I also prefer playing 3NT indeed.)

kw7796 2007-11-5 07:42 AM

i would agree that 3nt is a fair choice, though with some concern

from the 2 pass of W, i suppose that
W has 8-9 hcp (N: 13, E: 8/9, S: 10)
W has 0/1D since he did not over 3D after 3C (so partner should have a fair D suit)
hence, W has a rather long major suit (may be even 5-4), which will cause nt contract very trouble

ya, coz S has passed once, so i don't think NS can get a game contract. It will just be too risky to bid 3nt

4H可能有機會造成的
NT因為對方開叫2D

3NT我認同是十分危險的

## 回覆 #14 alexskt 的帖子

as per my respond on #9, D is not the most risky suit in nt contract,
rather i suspect that W has a long major suit

if i am W, has 8 hcp, 2+D
first aound pass, in the second round i will bid 3D
since NS cannot yet compromise a suit
EW 弱分但長門，即使倒也不會蝕

ya, i agree that 15hcp cannot bid 3D

let's stand as a W perspective
E 2D openning (i play 8-11 hcp, 6+ cards)
S pass, 3C ( ~10 hcp, 5C)
N 2H (10+ hcp, 4+H)

so i will think that EW has about 17-18 hcp
it is fair to overbid 3D then

2D = 6~10 HCP

case 3 :

W             N                 E               S
2D            pass
3D            ?

kw7796 2007-11-8 07:23 PM

this will be a total different situation...

btw, 我都係用sayc:smile_13:

N有 13hcp, 5H, 都會叫 3H, 但變左似阻叫多d

W             N                 E               S
2D          pass
pass          2H             pass(低限)      3C

W第二輪會選擇3D阻叫, 並show D support
