Not the passangers, the maintance people at the airport. Don't they have heat gun when they need to use heat shrink tubing?

My suggestion of using hair dryer is not that far off. 

One passenger's tweet:
"Never a good sign for your flight when the plane has been sitting on the tarmac for 2+ hours and the pilots are in the cabin taking suggestions from nearby passengers about how to close/arm the emergency exit door"

(The tweet is by Steven Lau but I can't link to the original author of this tweet because there is some kind of rule of this site against that sort of linking.)

I guess they need to meet certain criteria. Not our car door just grab the handle and drive off.  At 50k ft the pressure is pushing outside.

It doesn't take 16 hours to find a hit dryer. Infact many mechanic shop has professional heat gun. Either plug in or use propane.  When I was living up north people use a tiger torch runs by propane and blow into  stove 4 inches pipe to warm the oil pan of a car or truck in order to fire up. These are for desperate measures.
A passenger plane needs to meet safety before the mech can sign off.  So as the hotel chamber maid tried to open the window!
A plane has no 4 way blinkers either.

Obviously, it is more than frozen door hinges. It is very possible some fuel near or inside the door is frozen when they have the door opened to discharge the sick passenger. For that, they need to tow the plane to a hanger. Because custom is not opened during the night, they can't let the passengers off the plane until morning.

Some more work needed to be done.  Nobody wants to bear responsibility. A few hundred people's live.
