## 點解要入多 d 雞？

If you are in the business of selling chicken and the price of chicken and the price of beef both were to drop dramatically, what should you do with your inventory level of chicken?

( ) Keep it the same.
( ) Decrease the inventory.
( ) Increase the inventory.
( ) Get into the beef business.

Both chicken and beef are normal goods and, to certain extent substitute goods, both demand of chicken and beef will increase when both of the price drop with same level of individual income.  Hence, inventory level need to be increased to meet the expected grow in demand.

If chicken is the only good available, that make sense, how do we know people wouldn't prefer beef to chicken when they have higher 'real' income?

As I said, chicken and beef are considered as substitute goods and you are right, customers will shift to beef if beef price drops dramatically but not the price of chicken.  But now, both price of chicken and beef drop dramatically, customer behavior assume to remain the same and customer demand, i.e. unit will increase for both chicken and beef.  Hence, inventory level need to increase, not just for chicken but also beef.
Make sense?

I cannot 100% agree with what you are saying since both chicken and beef will have similar diminishing effect unless the price drop % is significantly different.  Besides, it also really depends on whether there is a significant change in customer behavior.
