There is no blood vessels inside the trabeculae of the spongy bone but some canaliculi openings on the surface of the trabeculae so how can the osteocytes there get nutrients?My textbook simply states that the osteocytes will get the nutrients by diffusion along the canaliculi but I don’t understand how it works.

In the bone matrix, osteocytes occupy the lacunae, and these lacunae are interconnected by thin tunnels called canaliculi. Long cytoplasmic processes are seen in the canaliculi, and nutrients (and intercellular messages) are transported (and transmitted) through the gap junctions. (Indeed the canaliculi allow communications among osteocytes, osteoblasts and osteoclasts.) Some canaliculi open to extracellular fluid at the bone surface and form an anastomosing network for nutrients and osteocytes' metabolic activities. Obviously, diffusions happen in the gap junctions and in extracellular fluid. This is why your books states that osteocytes gets nutrients along these tunnels via diffusion.

You will have a more in-depth study when you go to bone histology. I put one schematic diagram of a spongy bone and a microscopy image of osteocytes below, so you can have a better idea what is happening there.
